ood boss, bad boss: There
is a lot that comes to
mind when we picture
these two. Most successful lea-
ders attribute their success to
one or two bosses who mento-
red or groomed them in their
formative years. In fact, the del-
ta between high & low producti-
vity, retention, quality, and
pes of bosses.
So, I decided to crowd-sour-
ce on this topic. I asked my fri-
ends and many senior working
professionals about their perso-
nal experiences when they
think of good and bad bosses. I
could bucket their responses in-
to three major clusters mentio-
ned here:
due credit, a very good listener,
one who is tough & stretches
you but cares for you, and open
minded were associated with
good bosses. Characteristics
like micromanager, selfish, po-
or communicator, never avai-
lable, highly biased & judgmen-
tal, secretive, negative and
unapproachable were called
ones followed good bos-
ses, like makes a person
happy, energised, empo-
wered, trusted, appreci-
ated and respected. But very
dark feelings like making a per-
son anxious, frustrated, tired,
stressed and angry were attri-
buted to a bad boss.
Actions: Helpful ones like stay-
ways to improve me, gave
timely feedback, and back-
ed me up in front of lea-
dership were a few things
that good bosses did for their te-
am members. The bad ones we-
re never there for the big day,
stole ideas, lashed out in front of
others, very defensive, indul-
ging in extreme favouritism,
clear: There is a cause-and-ef-
fect relationship between fee-
lings and behaviours. The qua-
lities of good bosses always led
to more positive outcomes and
happy memories for their team
members, and the reverse with
bad bosses.
Does this mean that bad bos-
ses are bad people with poor va-
rate bad behaviour. It is a fact
that once organisations start lo-
oking at a single dimension —
that is, through the performan-
ce lens — for growing leaders,
other important factors like po-
tential and organisational va-
lue alignment get ignored. And,
hence, many managers and lea-
ders out there are ineffective.
themselves and are too afraid to
ask for help as they live in fear of
being judged.
The first step to becoming a
good leader is being self-aware
of your own strengths and gaps,
being open to receiving feed-
back and acting on it.
