Tutorial–7
1. Apply method of variation of parameters to find the the particular solution and hence write
the general solution of the following nonhomogeneous systems. If initial conditions are given,
find the particular solution that satisfies these conditions.
dx dy
(a) = x + 2y + t − 2, = 3x + 2y − 5t − 2.

dx dy
(b) = −2x + y, = −x + et .

dx dy
(c) = x − 5y + 2 sin t, = x − y − 3 cos t, x(0) = 1, y(0) = 0.

2. Repeat the above question by applying method of undetermined coefficients to find the partic-
ular solution and then write the general solution of the system.

3. Find the radius of convergence and interval of convergence for the given power series

X 2n X (−1)n
(a) xn , (b) (x − 5)n .

4. Find two power series solutions of the given differential equation about the ordinary point
x = 0.
(a) y 00 + x2 y = 0, (b) y 00 + x2 y 0 + xy = 0.

5. Consider the Chebyshev differential equation is (1−x2 )y 00 −xy 0 +α2 y = 0, where α is a constant.
Determine two linearly independent solutions in powers of x for |x| < 1.

6. Consider the Hermite equation

y 00 − 2xy 0 + λy = 0

where λ is a constant. Determine the first four terms in each of two linearly independent
solutions about x = 0.

7. For each of the following differential equation, find the first four nonzero terms in each of two
linearly independent power series solutions about the origin

(a) y 00 + (sin x)y = 0, (b) ex y 00 + xy = 0.
