THE EXPERIENCE OF A MACHINIST…

Introduction 1.0

One of the biggest problems of our country today is poverty. According to the Philippine
Statistics Authority in 2015, 21.6 percent of the Philippine population lives below the national
poverty line that is why some Filipinos could not finish College or could not continue college after
High School. Those people who did not finish school gets lower or middle type of jobs than those
who graduated and one of these jobs is becoming a Mechanist.

Mechanist set up and operates a variety of machine tools to produce precision parts and
instruments. Includes precision instrument makers who fabricate, modify, or repair mechanical
instruments may also fabricate and modify parts to make or repair machine tools or maintain
industrial machines, applying knowledge of mechanics, mathematics, metal properties, layout, and
machining procedures.

There are types of Machinist, operating machinist, set up machinist, and programming
machinist. An operation machinist is responsible for the day to day functioning of the machines –
they are the operators. Set up machinists are tasked with the job of making sure that everything is
in working order. They are in charge of monitoring the equipment, adjusting offsets, and
performing other tasks needed to maintain smooth operations. Some machinists specialized in
writing programs and modify existing programs in response to glitches encountered during test
runs. These machinists are known as programming machinist.

Mechanist use metalworking equipment, such as lathes, shaper, grinders and saws, to form
either unique and carefully shaped individual pieces, or multiple pieces of specifically tailored
metal. Machinist work large concerns that use metal in their final products, such as heating-vent
manufacturers or automobile factories, or they work for specialty shops that take specific orders
for needed part and equipment. Machinist must be able to read blueprints and be familiar with laser
and optical measuring devices that can test the degree of precision of their work. Some
specifications call for shaping a piece of metal to within one-one-thousandth-of-an-inch accuracy.
Machine shops usually employ between four and fifteen mechanists, so those who work in this
part of the industry should be comfortable working in close quarters. Machinist often know more
about the metals they work with than do the clients who order pieces made from these metals. The
machinist can and does act as an advisor, is the client makes false or misleading assumptions about
the materials being used or the finished product. Quality machinist have a good vision, endurance,

an eye for detail, excellent hand-eye coordination, a love for quality and precision, and respect for
tools of their trade. Working with metals can be dangerous for someone who is careless or easily
distracted. Indeed, the biggest concern with being a machinist is the daily threat of serious injury.
To prevent those to happen, it’-s prudent to acquire proper training and certification. If it’s possible,
it’s best to start preparations to become a machinist early. In their training, machinists get several
years of technical instruction and on-site training. Training can be acquired via community or
technical colleges, vocational schools, and apprentice programs. Often, you will be required to
have a high school diploma. Typically, becoming a machinist takes between 1 to 2 years for entry
level roles including a minimum of 8 weeks of technical training and over 1,500 hours of on the
job training each year.

We want to know and learn the daily life and experiences of mechanist, as we saw their
work, they conceptualize their hard work and worthy experiences to give us better machines.

occupational goals. Profiles for engineering, sales, laboratory, managerial, and laboring employees
were compared. It was found that the interests of entry workers were basically similar to those of
experienced workers, but that experienced workers with new occupational goals tended to express
interests different from those of satisfied experienced workers, and in the direction of the new field
of interest. Since all Ss were employment applicants, the possibility of conscious slanting of test
responses in the direction desired is mentioned.

THE EXPERIENCE OF A MACHINIST…

2.1 Conceptual Framework

We know eventually that a single Machinist can fix a Machinery like Cars, Motorcycle,
Generators, and many other Machine that usually used in our daily life. As a researcher, we often
diagnose their “experience” as a Machinist before and after work and their past becoming a one of
the Great Machinist. In almost every object you see in this world, the parts of it is created by a
Machinists. The Machinists used high tech machines which are mainly used for shaping metals,
plastics, ceramics, and woods. They are also able to modify machine parts manually.

As presented in Figure 1, the Input frame is consisted of the profile of the respondent both
control and experimental in terms of Name, Age, Gender, and the Monthly Income in his/her work.

As stated the Throughput frame, researcher questions contain according to Skills,

Knowledge, & Abilities and Experience each day in their work.

The Output Frame reveals the Impact of Their daily experiences as a Machinist according
to the Throughput Frame.

2.2 Variable discussion

2.2.1 EDUCATION

Machinists must have a high school diploma or equivalent. In high school, students should
take math courses, especially trigonometry and geometry. They also should take courses in
blueprint reading, metalworking, and drafting, if available.

Some advanced positions, such as those in the aircraft manufacturing industry, require the
use of advanced applied calculus and physics. The increasing use of computer-controlled
machinery requires machinists and tool and die makers to have experience using computers before
entering a training program.

2.2.2 TRAINING

There are multiple ways for workers to gain competency in the job as a tool. One common
way is through long-term on-the-job training, which lasts 1 year or longer.

2.2.3 INJURIES AND ILLNESS

Although the work of machinists is not inherently dangerous, working around machine
tools presents hazards, and workers must follow precautions. For example, workers must wear
protective equipment, such as safety glasses, to shield against bits of flying metal, earplugs to
dampen the noise produced by machinery, and masks to limit their exposure to fumes.

2.2.4 WORK SCHEDULE

Although many machinists and tool and die makers work full time during regular business
hours, some work on evenings and weekends because facilities may operate around the clock.
Overtime is also common.
THE EXPERIENCE OF A MACHINIST…

2.2.5 LICENSE, CERTIFICATION AND REGISTRATION

To boost the skill level of machinists and tool and die makers and to create a more uniform
standard of competency, a number of training facilities and colleges offer certification programs.
The Skills Certification System, for example, is an industry-driven program that aims to align
education pathways with career pathways. In addition, journey-level certification is available from
state apprenticeship boards after completing an apprenticeship.

Completing a recognized certification program provides machinists and tool and die
makers with better job opportunities and helps employers judge the abilities of new hires.

2.3 Statement of the problem

This Study aims to assess the Machinist Experience in their daily routine at gate 1 to gate
2, Cogeo; Year of 2018-2019.

It sought to answer the following questions:

1. What is the profile of the respondents in terms of the following: .

1.1 Name; (optional)
1.2 Age; (optional)
1.3 Gender; Male/Female
2. What are the Skills, Knowledge, & Abilities needed as a machinist?
3. What are the difference fixing cars, motorcycle, and etc.?
4. How much time do they spend each day?
5. What things should be profited in your monthly income?

Research Methodology 3.0

THE EXPERIENCE OF A MACHINIST…

3.1 RESEARCH DESIGN

The researcher will apply a qualitative approach, wherein, approaching a mechanist as a

respondent for exploring and understanding they're daily experience as an individuals or groups
ascribe to a social or human problem. Then, the researchers will apply the narrative study that
focus on the lived experience of an individual and this research it will focus on the story of the
mechanist in their daily lived experience of. Gathering information will have helped to focused
through the interview question to the machinist respondents. The researcher will record the data
and analyzed through the help of research question.

3.2 RESEARCH LOCALE

The study will be conducted in Antipolo City, Rizal, Cogeo, Gate 1. The researchers will find
a mechanist on some automotive area wherein machinist work really. They will be interviewed in
their automotive shop or somewhere near or comfortable for the mechanist.

3.3 POPULATION AND SAMPLING

In this study using the purposive sampling. Based on the intention or the purpose of study.
Only those elements will be selected from the population which suits the best for the purpose of
our study. The researches selected one respondent that will give information for this study who
happens to be a mechanist whose aged falls under 20years above of age that worked being a
mechanist and having family to know his experience in being a mechanist. Selecting these
respondents because they have the information which is needed for our research.

3.4 RESEARCH ETHICS

Research ethics is specifically interested in the analysis of ethical issues that are connected
with the subject or research. There are three objectives in research ethics. The first and broadest
objective is to protect human participants. The second objective is to ensure that research is
conducted in a way that serves interests of individuals, groups and/or society as a whole. Finally,
the third objective is to examine specific research activities and projects for their ethical soundness,
looking at issues such as the management of risk, protection of confidentiality and the process of
informed consent.
THE EXPERIENCE OF A MACHINIST…

In an interview, the researcher must ask a permission to the respondent if they're ok of

being revealed to the public or not. And the researcher must respect what the respondent decision
and to ensure they're gathered information protected if the respondent refuse to share it to public.
And the researcher must always be sincere and consistent in every action that he takes. And if the
researcher is getting close with the respondent. The researcher must take a distance to respect
themselves as a researcher and participants

3.5 RESEARCH INSTRUMENT

The researcher will use a questionnaire as their research instrument for gathering information and
to make it easy for the researcher for their studies. The researcher questionnaire has guidelines that
should be use like the questioner should be clear and has the right grammar that the respondent
will easily understand to avoid being misinterpret by the respondent. The researcher’s questioner
should be relevant and has an objective about the study and make sure that will use correct
grammar.

3.6 DATA COLLECTION

Researcher will collect a data by conducting a study about the life experience of people
who work as a mechanists and why did they choose to be a mechanist. The researcher may use a
voice recorder or video to document. The researcher must respect and value every respondent.
They should be also treat well by giving them a clear instruction and definition that the respondent
may not understand about the interview. So that the researcher can get or gather a high quality data
to the respondents. Also the researcher should avoid unnecessary questions that might frustrate the
respondents. The researcher should have the same approach and definition in mind when
responding to a tricky question about the respondents. After the research gathering. The
researchers will finally make a detailed document about the experience of a machinist.
THE EXPERIENCE OF A MACHINIST…

The respondent responses actively working into his job, while answering our invitations as
a respondent of our research. He despite to get his name but alternatively we caught the age of our
respondent. As we give the test questionnaire we try to record his voice so that we can repeat or
just alternative case for the evidences that we had a respondent. We applied the Ethics of as
research so that we can have their answers that will connect our topic.

We observe him to his work while answering each questions we had, he shows what were
should be fixed, maintain the machines better, the limitations, and intensity level of the machine
according how big small, short or long, and even how many liters’ oil should be put in machine
like motorcycle. Although the income may not be bad for raising the family and to support their
finance daily like foods, shelter, and etc. We get some feedback to be differentiate the 2 machine;
the car and motorcycle, his abilities tie that he could fix it depends on how huge were damage was.
We saw his skills compare to other that workers perfectly; mostly he is more productive, so he can
get more chances of customers,

He shows that he was knowledgeable person into his job; ‘thou he had problem getting his
dreams to be “seaman”. Their father gives the machinery shop for their alternative work or may
the permanent work supporting their family or on its own. Being machinist was hard at all, he tells
more about wirings, and kind of 2 machine fitly works in motorcycle is harder if ever they have
gone wrong. He was a Graduate of Marine Engineering so that makes him knowledgeable person
into this particular research.

Major problems like Family, Peers, and into his Job maybe hindrance to work properly in
his daily work in his owned shop. He particularly focuses on the work rather chatting the other that
makes him more admirable in works. Problem may occur to in what his working if ever thing gone
wrong. “It’s not dangerous at all, just be careful “as we thought he said.

Being a machinist were hard like others jobs too, he contributes the society to fix the machine like
the “recycling process” to gain the abilities to run machinery again; and not makes to buy again
another one that will cause more expensive. As the technology evolve, the machinist will
contribute to our society; fixing the damage even change it to better machine. Many people what

you really want the job and focusing into working time. ‘Thou we see him having time in friends,
he still balances his friend, family, and job.

We as a research found out that the experience of a machinist was terribly hard for person
don’t have any experiences in college. Fixing machines every single was hard, even fixing
problems according to what were their personal problems, but he still manages to keep its job.

Recommendation 7.0

As a researcher, we recommend to give more detail about what were the potential impact
of his/her problem unto its work; and how she/he manage particular events like when times of low
in customers.

#1bakit pinili nyo pong maging isang mikaniko

THE EXPERIENCE OF A MACHINIST…

karamihang nagagamit dito
