▪ Definition - a sharing of e- between two non-

metals.
– Called a molecule

▪ Goal is still for each atom to reach its OCTET

Covalent Compounds

▪ Example:
▪ Diatomic Molecules - elements that cannot exist in
a one atom state.
▪ Have No Fear Of Ice Cold Brownies
▪ H2 N2 F2 O2 I2 Cl2 Br2
What is the difference between
Ionic and Covalent Bonds?

▪ What do the dogs represent?

▪ What does the toy represent?

▪ How is covalent different than

ionic?
Naming Covalent Molecules

▪ Rules for Naming: 1 Mono

– The first element is named first, using 2 Di
elements name. 3 Tri
– Second element named as an anion
4 Tetra
▪ Drop the “a” on the prefix when adding
to oxide. 5 Penta
– Greek prefix describes how many of each 6 Hexa
atom
▪ Never use mono on the first atom 7 Hepta
8 Octa
9 Nona
