WORK AND COMMITMENT.

FUNDRAISER
I am very proud of each and everyones contributions to the Halau for our
fundraiser. We appreciate those that helped organize this fundraiser, those
that contributed funds to get it started, and those who are helping to sell. I
would like to share our mission for the halau at this point.

Kalama's Mission Statement

To educate & promote the art of Polynesian music, language & dance to all. With many performances
throughout the State of Colorado, our Annual

Lei Day Celebration takes place in May. Together, members of Kalama collaborate & strive to entertain as
well as enlighten all communities who

wish to experience the “Aloha Spirit.”

To continue our mission, it is imperative to have fundraisers to help support our vision. Funds raised helps
our group with fees & initial costs to obtain

eligibility requirements for non-profit status as well as to help pay for costumes that are complicated to
make, elaborate & may be too costly.

With the halau growing so rapidly and with the vision that I have going
forward with the halau (and hopefully many of you share the vision as well) I
would like each and everyone of you to please read the following (also please
read to your keiki if they attend class too). The following demonstrates that
Halau is not just for performance (although we all LOVE to perform!) but for
culture, education, and family.

A hālau hula is a school in which the ancient Hawaiian dance form called hula is
taught. The term comes from hālau, a workshed, and hula, the traditional dance of the
Hawaiian Islands. Prior to European contact, the Hawaiian language had no word for
"school," as children learned from their parents, aunts, uncles, and elders. Children
who showed promise in a specialized art or craft would be apprenticed to a master and
work in the master's hālau. School, as a specialized place of instruction, did not exist
in Hawai`i prior to the arrival of Christian missionaries.
In ancient times, students joining a hālau hula would be dedicated solely to the study
of hula for the duration of their training. Their families would provide maintenance
for the support of the hālau. Today, students have set hours for study at the hālau, and
often pay monthly dues to help the kumu, roughly "headmaster" of the hālau with
support and maintenance.
There is great variation between hālau. Some focus primarily on ancient styles of hula,
others on modern styles, and some study both. Some hālau continue to preserve very
strict kapu, sacred protocols, while others are noa, or free of kapu. The styles of hula
taught in different hālau also can vary greatly. Styles are passed down from kumu to
haumana, and knowledgeable students of hula can tell which hula lineage is
represented by watching the dancer's presentation.
Location of hālau also can vary widely, from the garage of the kumu's home to
community centers to the lawns of parks, hālau hula can be found dancing wherever
there is space and interested students.

Support in Fundraisers
I think that it is so admirable that we all have faith that we CAN do this
fundraiser as a group. For those that were at the bakesale or baked for the
bakesale MAHALO for contributing. Part of these fundraisers are trial and
error or a learning process. Although we did not raise a whole lot of money
for the fundraiser I know that we had fun, we worked together, and we
learned lessons for next time if we decide to do it again.

I would really like a HALAU support with the fundraisers so I am asking all of
you to see if there is anywhere we can go as a group to sell the Mele Mac and
Caramel Popcorn. I would like to have 3-4 people scheduled to go together at
different locations based upon your schedule to help one another sell. We
can have morning groups and evening groups. At this point we know we can
schedule a selling day at Encore Dance and L&L Hawaiian BBQ. I was
thinking grocery stores, churches, plazas, and other businesses. If you have
a place that we can schedule please email me as soon as possible. Any
ideas?
I will be sending out a newsletter for the winter to tell our clients and others
about our locations and to come and support us.

Ellen has been kind enough to offer a motivational incentive for the
top seller! For those that sell the most ... Ellen will be donating the
following from her business- THE PAMPERED CHEF (For Halau
Members Only)

"Pampered Chef Pizza Basket"

---Large Round Stone with Handles

---Pizza Cutter

---Pizza Roll/ Crust mix

value: $50.00

***this will make a very nice Holiday gift for someone special OR
keep it for yourself***

HOW CAN YOU WIN IT???

Receive 1 raffle ticket for each item sold

Receive 2 raffle tickets for each combo sold

All money and order forms due weekly to Astrid. Ellen will get
numbers from Astrid. Deadline for the raffle drawing is December
11, 2010. Winner will be notified as soon as possible.

Please remember that when you collect checks to have them make it payable
to you and then give Astrid cash for it when you turn it in.

COSTUMES
Patty, Diane, Dani, and I will be scheduling a meeting soon to go over all of
the costumes for the different numbers and what the costumes will approx.
cost. Hopefully our fundraisers will offset the cost of most all of the costumes
for dancers and for musicians. Dani and I have been working closely to figure
out what type of costumes to order and the most costly way to make them or
order them. We also want the costumes to last so we don't want to order
poor quality of costumes. As soon as we have information for the group
about costume ordering I will send out an email.
TIME LINE
I have been working closely with the DL Parsons Theatre for Lei Day. The
contract is in the mail and this is where we will be having the show. They
have also given me permission to have a fire show outside after the theatre
show. We will most likely have workshops and food available as well. If we
can get our group into a non-profit status the costs at the theatre will be at a
discounted rate. This non-profit status will be achieved through the
fundraiser. I would like to ask the group for any volunteers that would like to
help in the planning of Lei Day. Please contact me if you can help! The
sooner we start organizing this event the less stressful it will be for everyone.

Here is a time line for the Halau that I would like to share with everyone. This
time line represents what I would like the Halau to get accomplished. I know
we can do it!
