“K to 12’s Purpose”

By: Peñero, Angeline P.

The Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013 also known as K12 Program or K to 12
Curriculum is a program wherein the Department of Education added two more years in the
education of the students. The K to 12’s purpose is to facilitate, prepare and establish students
that are globally competitive.

K to 12 Curriculum facilitates growth in education system of the Philippines by

giving the students enough time to master skills and concept. It enhances the basic learning
needs of the students. As a student, I can say that K to 12 is truly effective in making
improvements when it comes to my skills and knowledge. It is more like training for me,
equipping me to be prepared in the future. And as I study this Curriculum, I can say that the
process is not that crucial for students. In fact, it provides students a generalized and easy to
understand lessons, and I think it is by the help of a psychological study about human mental
capability that are based on their age because age affects our knowledge as we discover new
things at a time.

The K to 12 Program prepares the student on a higher education also known as

college. The two added year or Senior High of K to 12 is the tool in preparing them. Since,
Senior High offers strands that is based on the students’ interest or passion and can be based on
their skills and knowledge. So that when they enter college they have prior knowledge about the
course they want to take. K to 12 Curriculum prepares the students not only on a higher
education but also on workplace. Since the students have a longer period of preparation, they are
expected to be more skillful and knowledgeable. In the workplace, skills and knowledge is the
most important. And for me as a student that could be a great change in the nation, having
skillful and knowledgeable workers who can make a workmanlike job and excellent works is a
treasure that we can be proud of.

The best thing about K to 12 is that it establishes students that are globally
competitive. The Philippines is said as the only country in Asia and among the three remaining
countries in the world that has a low quality of education because of having just 10-year basic
education cycle. But since, most country requires 12-years of basic education as an entry in
every professional job; the recognition of Filipino professionals abroad has been hinder.
According to the former President Aquino, “the K-12 program will pave the way for an ever
brighter future for young Filipinos by equipping them with basic education up to international
standards.” That is why it is very beneficial to have this curriculum in our country. To be
globally competitive we must have a global standard. The K to 12 Curriculum will put Filipino
students at par with the rest of the world.

K to 12 is more than just adding two more years to high school. It is more than just
a change in the education system. It facilitates the students with higher level of learning; it
prepares the students for tertiary learning and prepares them in joining the workforce. And in the
end, it makes the K-12 graduates to become globally competitive. For me it is true that investing
in education is the key toward reaching national growth and development that will lead to our
success. And I believe that we must all know the purpose why K to 12 was implemented.
