The Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013 also known as K12 Program or K to 12
Curriculum is a program wherein the Department of Education added two more years in the
education of the students. The K to 12’s purpose is to facilitate, prepare and establish students
that are globally competitive.
The best thing about K to 12 is that it establishes students that are globally
competitive. The Philippines is said as the only country in Asia and among the three remaining
countries in the world that has a low quality of education because of having just 10-year basic
education cycle. But since, most country requires 12-years of basic education as an entry in
every professional job; the recognition of Filipino professionals abroad has been hinder.
According to the former President Aquino, “the K-12 program will pave the way for an ever
brighter future for young Filipinos by equipping them with basic education up to international
standards.” That is why it is very beneficial to have this curriculum in our country. To be
globally competitive we must have a global standard. The K to 12 Curriculum will put Filipino
students at par with the rest of the world.
K to 12 is more than just adding two more years to high school. It is more than just
a change in the education system. It facilitates the students with higher level of learning; it
prepares the students for tertiary learning and prepares them in joining the workforce. And in the
end, it makes the K-12 graduates to become globally competitive. For me it is true that investing
in education is the key toward reaching national growth and development that will lead to our
success. And I believe that we must all know the purpose why K to 12 was implemented.
