A Lesson Plan in Mathematics

For Grade 2
Grade Level: 2
Strand: Numbers and Number Sense
Competencies Addressed:
 Identifies the first through the 20th with the emphasis on 11th to 20th object in a given
set from a given point of references.
 Reads and writes ordinal numbers from 1st through the 20th.
Prerequisite concepts and Skills:
Counting numbers from 1 to 50.
Read and write numbers in symbols and in words.
About the Lesson:
This lesson will let the pupils see that numbers also tell the position or order of things in
a set or group.
Objectives:
In this lesson, the pupils are expected to:
a. Identifies the 1st through the 20th with the emphasis on 11th to 20th object in a given set from
a given point of reference.
b. Reads and writes ordinal numbers from 1st through the 20th.
INSTRUCTIONAL PROCEDURES
A. Present the following problem:
On Monday morning, Tisoy rides on a jeepney having a capacity of 24 passengers.
On one side of a jeepney, there were 12 passengers and Tisoy is one of them, What is the
order of Tosay among the 12 passengers sitting on one side of the jeepney?

 Call on the pupils to read the problem. What do we want to find out in the problem?
 Ask the pupils to solve the problem in their own way.
B. Possible answers and solutions:
1. By counting the total number of passengers in one side of the jeepney where Tisoy belongs
and locate the order of Tisoy counting from the first passenger behind the driver.
Answer: There were 12 passengers on one side of the jeepney and Tisoy comes seventh.
2. Given the number of passengers in one side, count the number of passengers from the
left\last passenger to the person right before Tisoy. Subtract the total number countedto the
total number of passengers in one side of the jeepney.
Answer:12-4=7 therefore, Tisoy comes 7th from the 1st person next to the driver.
C. DEVELOPMENT\DISCUSSION\EXPLORATION
Let the pupils explain how they got their answers.
For solution1:
There were 12 passengers in one side of a jeepney. By counting, there were 6 passengers
before Tisoy. So, 6+1=7, therefore, Tisoy comes 7th in 12 passengers.
For solution 2:
There were 12 passengers in one side of a jeepney. By counting from the last passenger to the
passenger before Tisoy, there were 5 passengers. So, 12-5=7, therefore, Tisoy comes 7th
passenger from the first passenger next to the driver.
D. Practice Exercise
1. Given a calendar, let the pupils answer the exercise.
Give the order of the days of the week in the list below.

 Sunday is the ________________day of the week.

 Monday is the _______________day of the week.
 Tuesday is the ______________day of the week.
 Wednesday is the _______________day of the week.
 Thursday is the _____________day of the week.
 Friday is the ___________day of the week.
 Saturday is the _____________day of the week.
Ask some pupils to explain their answers.
2. Write the missing ordinal number in each box.
1.
5th 8th 10th

2.
3rd 5th 8th
3.
14th 16th 19th 20th

4.
13th 15th 17th

E. Summary:
What did you learn in this lesson?
a. Numbers can also tell the position or order of things in a set or group.
