ACTIVITY 2

1. Potassium bromide, Camphor water, mixes and makes a solution.

Potassium bromide . . . . . . 8.0 g

Camphor water qs ad . . . . 60 mL

 Camphor is salted out of the saturated camphor water by the electrolyte, which is better
able to compete for the water.

2. Benzoin tincture, Glycerin, Rose water, mixes and makes a solution.

Tincture Benzoin compound . . . . . 5.0 mL

Glycerin . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 15.0 mL

Rose water qs ad . . . . . . . . . . . 100 mL

 Resins and other components of the tincture – soluble only in high vehicles

Question for Research.

1. Identify;

a.) the composition of each component.

o Potassium bromide has the chemical formula KBr. It is an ionic salt, with a formula
weight of 119 g/mol.
o Camphor (Cinnamomum camphora) is a terpene (organic compound) that’s commonly
used in creams, ointments, and lotions.
o Glycerin known to be glycerol, is a common name of 1,2,3-propanetriol, a compound
naturally present in form of fatty acid esters ( triglycerides)
o Rose water is a liquid made from water and rose petals.
b.) the use of each component

o Potassium bromide is a halide salt most commonly used as an add-on anticonvulsant

drug to phenol barbital when the latter is ineffective or not as effective as desired
o People use camphor topically to relieve pain and reduce itching. It is used in products
such as Vicks VapoRub.
o Benzoin is also used to help relieve and soothe minor irritation of the nose, throat, and
airways (e.g., laryngitis, croup) when it is mixed with hot water and the steam is inhaled.
o Glycerin is used as a moisturizer to treat or prevent dry, rough, scaly, itchy skin and
minor skin irritations (e.g., diaper rash, skin burns from radiation therapy).
o Rose water it is used as a perfume due to its sweet scent, but it has medicinal and
culinary values, as well.

2. What are the remedies for the prescription as it relates to;

a.) Excipients

 Addition of the camphor water- eliminates the incompatibility

 Addition of the tincture with rapid stirring yields a fine colloidal dispersion.

b.) Process

 Solution of the bromide in a minimum amount of purified water

 Change in solvent system – avoids precipitation and No suspending agent is necessary
