The Computer As The Teacher’s Tool

The COMPUTER as the teacher’s HANDY-TOOL

 It can support the constructivist and social constructivist
paradigms of constructivist learning.

Constructivist
 Introduced by Piaget (1981) and Bruner (1990).
 As an approach, it allows students to construct their own
concepts, principles and meaning about anything. (knowledge
discovery)
 It can be done socially and it is called social constructivism.
 It is also employed when a teacher make use of computer as a
tool of teaching.

The Computer’s Capabilities

 Provides different uses
 Gives advantages and convenience
 Informative technology (the trend nowadays with the use of computers in all
its application)
 Provide and facilitate student’s learning in schools
 Source of assignments, projects, and researches

Computer as the teacher’s tool

 Informative Tool
 Communication Tool
 Constructive Tool
 Co-constructive Tool
 Situating Tool
Informative tool
 Computer can provide vast amounts of information in various forms, such as
texts, graphics, sound and video.
 In constructivist, it is not enough for the learners to just download relevant
information, it is good when learners used the gathered information for
composition or presentation of projects as may be assigned by the teacher.

Communication tool
 Teacher can have a virtual class thus defying space and still pursue the
teaching and learning process
 As a constructivist tool, with the programs installed in the computer,
students can construct their own work. They can organize their ideas into
multimedia presentations or through texts. The teacher can use the computer
to allow the learners to develop their own concepts or express themselves
through computer creativity activities

Constructive tool
 The computer itself can be used for manipulating information, visualizing
one’s understanding and building new knowledge
 The learners can create in the computer their own ideas, present and
organize ideas using the Microsoft Word, Powerpoint Presentation and many
more.

Co-constructive tool
 Teachers allows the learners to work cooperatively and construct a shared
understanding of new knowledge.
 Teacher can make this tool to develop cooperation among the learners
Situating tool
 Computer can create 3-D images on display to give the learners the feeling
that are situated in a virtual environment

Can the COMPUTER replace the ROLE of the TEACHER?

Computer
 BASIC KNOWLEDGE
o Motivate students (through audio-visual aids; also can repeat)
o Can ask basic questions using internet
o Remains in service 24/7

 COMPLEX IDEAS
o CAN NOT
 Determine why the answers are wrong
 Find out why a students is making mistakes
 Deal with tasks involving reasoning
 Handle students with extreme difficulties in learning

TEACHERS
 CAN
o Present important concepts in different ways
o Determine where the learners made an error
o work, play, dance with the learners
o monitor learners’ grasp of concepts
o Evaluate learners’ reasoning

Computer CAN’T REPLACE the role of the teacher.
