INTERDISCIPLINARY CONTEXTUALIZATION

A. Rationale

Good educational systems that ensure the opportunities for professional development programs should always be available and
accessible to teachers. This is stated in the Republic Act No. 10533, otherwise known as the Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013. Thus,
the Department of Education (DepEd) institutionalizes Learning Action Cell (LAC) that aims to develop and support successful teachers
by nurturing their knowledge, attitudes, and competencies in terms of curriculum, instruction, and assessment in their work stations.

The Philippines nowadays is facing a crucial status in terms of its students’ academic achievements. Studies revealed that the
Philippines ranked second to the last in the Trends in Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) examination and placed third from the
bottom during the TIMSS – Repeat Study conducted among Asian countries. According to a Senate Economic Planning Office (SEPO)
report, the National Achievement Test (NAT) conducted yearly showed the results of secondary students for Mathematics, English, and
Science is deteriorating over the past four years.

This remarkable decline in the achievement levels of students is alarming and discouraging, yet so challenging to note. These dismal
results have been attributed to poor quality of education. As a result, to this, the K-12 curriculum framework highlights the fundamental
importance of context in shaping the curriculum, and consequently, the teaching- learning process. The K-12 curriculum allows for
curriculum enhancement in relation to the diverse background of learners. Section 5 of the Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013 (RA
10533) states that the DepEd shall adhere to the standards and principles in developing the enhanced basic education curriculum; flexible

enough to enable and allow schools to localize, indigenize and enhance the same based on their respective educational and social
contexts. The production and development of locally produced teaching materials shall be encouraged and approval of these materials
shall devolve to the regional and division education. To fulfil this mandate, there is a need for a LAC session on interdisciplinary
contextualization.

B. Overview

San Nicolas National High School aims to develop students to become globally competitive in the future. Thus, effective and
flexible strategies must be employed to help students understand, reason, memorize, and solve problems. Strategies are important
because they help students understand and solve problems in ways appropriate to the situation at hand. They can also improve and
hasten learning. The broader the range of strategies and approaches introduced in the learning process, the more successful they can
be in solving, reading, text comprehension, and memorizing. Teachers must be empowered to cope with these changes. This LAC plan
focuses on honing teachers in integrating interdisciplinary contextualization in the teaching-learning process. Thus, all the Junior and
Senior High School teachers of San Nicolas National High School will be the participants. It is expected that at the end of each session,
teachers can apply the knowledge they learned in contextualizing, localizing, and indigenizing their lessons.

C. Objectives

At the end of the session, the participants are expected to:

1. gain knowledge on the legal bases and importance of contextualization, localization, and indigenization in teaching-learning
situation;
2. create lesson exemplars using the 7E model;
3. acquire fundamental skills and knowledge in problem solving using contextualized lessons; and
4. apply interdisciplinary contextualized lessons in different subject areas.
