Introduction/Purpose

 This meeting is intended to briefly discuss Quality


Requirements for RC Pipe Culverts.

 This meeting is intended to fulfill the Schedule Q


requirement to conduct a kick-off meeting prior to start
of every new activity.

 Coating and Earthwork shall be performed per their


respective approved ITPs.

 ITP and Checklists already approved.


Materials – Storage, Handling and Preservation

 Pipes shall be offloaded using appropriate equipment to


avoid damage to pipes.
 Lifting devices shall have sufficient bearing on the
inside of the pipe to avoid damage resulting from a
concentration of stresses around the lift holes.
 Pipes shall be stored on hard surface, supported under
barrels such that socket is load free.
 Pipe should preferably be stacked barrel to barrel with
sockets overhanging alternative sides.
 Pipes should not be dragged, rather rolled only on
rock/stone free surfaces.
 Pipes should not be stacked in greater numbers, this
table can be used as reference:

 Gaskets and lubricant shall be stored per manufacturer


recommendations.
 Rubber Gaskets shall be stored in cool place away from
direct sunlight.
RC Pipes Pre-installation

 No pipe culverts shall be placed until the excavations


and foundations have been approved.
 Contractor shall produce shop drawings for the
approval of Saudi Aramco.
 Foundation preparation & Pipe supports shall be in
accordance with approved Shop drawings.
 Suitable socket holes shall be provided, so after laying
only the barrel of the pipe receives bearing pressure.
 Expansion joints shall be provided every 27 M C/C or as
indicated in the drawings.
 Contraction joint shall be provided at every 9 M C/C or
as indicated in the drawings.
RC Pipes Installation

 The pipes shall be carefully laid true to lines and grades


given, with hub, bell, or groove ends upstream, and with
the spigot or tongue end entered the full length into the
adjacent section of pipe.
 Any pipe which is not in true alignment or which shows
any undue settlement after laying, but before the fill is
placed, shall be taken up and re-laid.
 The joints shall be Installed in accordance with the
manufacturer's recommendations to insure that the
gasket has not been displaced.
 Multi-barrel culverts, shall be laid with greater of ½
span of the pipe, or a minimum of 300mm between the
pipes.
RC Pipes Installation

 All pipes shall be cleaned before installation and shall


be kept clean until accepted in completed work.
 Before any joint is made the pipes shall be checked to
ensure a close joint with adjoining pipe and the inverts
are matched and conform to the required grade.
 Gasket shall be inspected for damage before placing and
shall be free of kinks. The gasket is then stretched over
socket up to recess ring and checked for snug fit.
 The bell & Spigot shall be lubricated with a soap or
silicon product for easy placement. Each pipe shall be
carefully pushed, without excessive force, into place
without damaged to pipe or gasket.
RC Pipes Installation

 Any joint in which gasket is damaged or improperly


seated shall be pulled apart and re-positioned a slight
"Blop" sound indicates a suitable sealed joint.
 Check line and grade as each section is installed, don't
adjust pipe alignment or grade with pipe in the home
position.
 Don't operate heavy construction equipment over the
pipe until adequate backfill is in place.
Final Acceptance

 All works shall have been inspected and accepted.


 All test reports shall be reviewed and accepted by Saudi
Aramco.
 All defects shall have been repaired.
 All precast and in contact with soil concrete shall have
received bituminous coating.
