1. Introduction
The ability to utilize effective repair methods is critically important for gas and liquid transmission
lines which are subject to the requirements of the SSGC LPG for transmission of LP gas requires
damaged pipelines to be cut out and replaced, or repaired by methods in which reliable
engineering tests and analyses show that they can permanently restore the serviceability of the
pipe.
2. PREPARATORY WORK
 Locate the Repair point, survey the Work Site and access the approachability for the vehicles up to
the working site (collect maximum information in case of out station locations).
 Inform the concerned Installation Manager/Station Engineer (upstream and downstream) pump
stations about the repairing work to be under taken.
 Equipment’s and consumables to be checked and loaded in truck/crane as per emergency
items/equipment’s list for leak repair job
 Work to be carried out under the supervision of a designated Site Engineer from Pipeline
Maintenance Section.
 Repairing team should consist of as per site requirement
 At the site, barricade the required activity zone around the Repair point with a warning Tape.
 Check the security arrangements arranged/provided by the concerned Station -in-Charge to control
the crowd for safe working.
 Check Firefighting support team as per Site Requirement.
 Carry out Tool box Meeting with contractor/ working team including contractor’s men and the
safety supervisor(s) as named in Contract document by the contractor.
 Ensure that the Use of PPE is in order.
 Setting-up of equipment and machinery such as Welding Machine, Generator, Water pump, electric
cables with extension cords & Switch Boards etc.
 If needed, make a pit for storing spilled oil at a safe distance from welding point
 Check and confirm with Electrical Section about the site lighting as per site Requirement
 All Mobile phones to be switched-off in the working area.
 Hot Work Permit to be issued to as per SSGC Rule and Regulation
 Keep updating the Duty Dispatcher about the progress of the job.

 Liaise and confirm with LPG Movement Control Room for stopping the pumping operation and
isolation of the affected Pipeline section.
 Inform and brief to site Representative about the site before starting the job.
 Co-ordinate with Dispatch Control and Station Engineer for closing of the block valve (line v/v) on
the higher elevation side of the repairing location.

 All valve operations will be done under the supervision and in presence of an Engineer.
 Release of residual pressure at site to be done in presence of the Site Engineer.
 Collect information from the duty Dispatcher about the line pressure in the section, isolation valve
condition and also convey in advance the approximate time and flow requirement during welding
work.
3. CUTTING OF EXTERNAL FITTING
 Working point to be checked and inspected again before starting the job.
 Remove the coating material and clean the surrounding area of pipe near the fitting as per
operational requirement.
 Slowly open the end valve of the fitting to see the line pressure.
 If line pressure is nil due to depressurization and no LPG is coming out proceed for pegging
operation.
 Put a wooden peg in the pilferage point hole through the valve, fix it firmly by hammering and wash
inside space of the valve and nipple thoroughly with water to remove the gas/oil
 Clean the working area thoroughly for any trace of Gas/oil. Check the bottom of the pit also for any
trace of oil. If needed, clean again before starting the job.
 Check again PPE, safe distance of equipment’s, connections of generator & welding machine etc.
 Check that adequate numbers of fire extinguishers are positioned around the working pit along the
wind direction with trained personnel.
4. Pipe Repair Methods
Defects in pipelines may be repaired by a variety of methods. Those that have been
commonly used by pipeline operators include:
 Removal of a section of pipe and replacement with new pipe
 Grinding an anomaly to significantly reduce its effect as stress concentrator or site for crack
initiation
 Reinforcing a defective piece of pipe with an encircling sleeve

 Placing a sealed pressure containment device (clamp or sleeve) over a defect, including one that
is leaking
 Applying a composite wrap over corrosion and blunt wall-loss defects
 Applying deposited weld metal in a defect to fill it with new material
 Placing a patch or sole (partial encirclement reinforcement device) over a defect
 Hot tapping to remove a defect

Descriptions of these methods are provided in this manual for the benefit of those who may not be
familiar with one or more of them. Throughout this manual, we refer to temporary repairs. For our
purposes, a temporary repair is a repair that will be re- evaluated within a period specified by the
pipeline operator’s written procedures. Any repair that is left in service for a period greater than
five years, without being re- examined, should be considered to be permanent.

5. SITE RESTORATION AND NORMALISATION

 Manual Coating and wrapping of pipe section to be done as per procedure (SOP).
 Check if the coal tar melting arrangement is at a safe distance.
 Clear the site from all the undesirable materials.
 Check bonding of coating.
 Arrange - Backfilling and restoration if line is Under Ground
