DESIGN OF STRUCTURE WITH EARTHQUAKE REQUIREMENTS

1. Objective

To design high rise buildings according to earthquake requirements.

2. Current Situation

i. Peak tremor acceleration recorded in Malaysia is 0.01332g therefore it falls at seismic

zone 0 (0.00g to 0.02g).
ii. Our building design which is according to BS8110 Horizontal Notional Loads is more
than peak tremor force. Thus, the sway and drift check has covered the tremor force.

3. Current Requirement by Authority

According to DBKL, building with 30 storeys and above, design for earthquake must
be applied however not yet enforced.

4. Code of Practice.

The code of practice used are BS8110 for reinforced concrete design and Uniform
Building Code 1997 for Sway and Drift and Earthquake design.

5. Design Procedure.

i. Modelling Hi-Rise as per normal checking for Sway and Drift.

ii. For considering Earthquake resistance, identify the Centre of Mass, CM and Centre of
Rigidity, CR for every floor and every direction. (X & Y)

iii. To compare the displacement of CM and CR < 5% of building dimension for each
direction (X & Y). (UBC97 1630.6)

iv. If the displacement is more than 5%, add shear wall or column at weaker parts of the
building to shift the Centre of Rigidity, CR near to Centre of Mass, CM of the building

6. Software Used and Problem encountered

i. Software Used : Orion 17

ii. Problem Encountered: default limit value for drift is 0.002

7. Problem overcome

Resetting the default limit value to 0.02 as per UBC 97 for drift check.
