a) read, write, and identify the place and value of each digit in a nine-digit whole number; b) compare and order whole numbers expressed through millions; and Content
c) round whole numbers expressed through millions to the
nearest thousand, ten thousand, and hundred thousand. Activity The Learning activity will be teaching students to use place value to the hundreds. This slideshow/ activity is set up in a notes format with an embedded interactive activity and problems that students can practice to master the material on the smartboard.
1) As the teacher I would start by printing out this in
notes format and hand out to students for them to have. The activity will be presented to the students on the smartboard where both students and the teacher could interact and work. 2) I would start by going over the notes slide by slide giving the students an overview of what place value is as they take notes and follow along with their copy. As seen in this activity, it does a great job giving an introduction and overview of what place value is. 3) After going over the notes, this presentation goes into and gives a lot of different practice examples in many different formats so as the teacher I would do a few with the whole class so everyone can get warmed up and ready. Then I would call students one at a time to come up to the smartboard to complete one problem and then explain to the class how they did it as we go over it as a class. 4) As we are going over each problem, students will be working on them at their seat and completing the Pedagogy
problems on their copy of the activity.
5) To complete the activity, I will assign three problems in the notes/activity for students to complete on their own to turn into me to see if they understand the material. Once they turn it in and I have graded it, we will go over it as a class. 6) After completing the entire activity students should have mastered place value and be able to use it when needed with little to no assistance
* This activity would also be great to use with a collaborative
teaching classroom because while one teacher is teaching and going over place value, the other teacher could be completing the problems on the smartboard or walking around to make sure students are on task and doing it right.
