provide some examples of antonyms that are not used in the
SmartBoard activity. After the teacher has finished lecturing,
she/he will explain and demonstrate how to complete the
SmartBoard activity, which is called Antonym Match. There is a
total of twenty words, ten are displayed on the knight’s shields,
while the remaining ten are displayed on the dragon’s fireballs.
Each word displayed on a shield needs to be matched up with a
word displayed on a fireball. To complete this activity, students
will drag the shields into the outline of the shield the knight is
holding. Students will then match this word with its antonym
found on a fireball, and will then drag this fireball into the
outline of the circle around the dragon’s mouth. If the student
correctly matches the antonyms, the shield and fireball will pair
up and move to one of the ten white boxes. After explaining the
activity and providing a brief demonstration of how it works, the

teacher will divide the classroom into groups of four. Each group
of four will get the chance to come up to the SmartBoard and
complete this activity. Each student in a group should match at
least two antonyms so that every student gets a chance to touch
the SmartBoard. Students will receive seven minutes for this
activity. Once the time is up, the teacher will restart the
SmartBoard activity and call on the next group to come up and
have their turn. While one group is working on the SmartBoard
activity, each of the remaining groups will be brainstorming
other antonyms and they will each make a poster with drawings
that represent these antonyms. This activity could also be utilized
again as a warm-up and refresher.
