MATH
APPLICATION OF MEASURING TEMPERATURE

A DepEd-BEAM Distance Learning Program supported by the Australian Agency for International Development
To the Learner

Hello! My dear learner, its nice to be with you again. Let’s have
fun in solving the problem in measuring the body and the weather
temperature. Hope by this time you are already skillful in computing
the body of weather temperature.

Let’s Learn This

As we discussed from the previous module which all about

measuring the body temperature and weather. We know hat
temperature is the degree of hotness and coldness of the body and or
the objects. Thermometer is the instruments used to measure. We have
clinical thermometer and room thermometer. If the temperature is
high, the liquid rises. If it is low, the liquid goes down. The
temperature reading is in degree Celsius or (˚c).

Let’s Try This

Use the table to answer your questions:

Temperature
Places/City May 17 May 29
Malita 15˚c 17˚c
Baguio City 24˚c 26˚c
Davao City 20˚c 22˚c

- 63 -
1. ON may 17 which city had the lowest temperature?
2. On may 29, which city had the highest temperature?
3. What was the different between the temperature of Davao city and
Baguio on May 17?
4. Which city had the highest temperature on the two dates?

Let’s Study This

In solving the body and the weather temperature, we used the

thermometer. Clinical thermometer for measuring the body hotness
and coldness and room thermometer for measuring the weather
temperature.

Observe the two temperature:

- 64 -
On December 31, the temperature was 12˚c but on January 10, it
went down to a degree below zero. This is usually written “-9˚c”. The
minus sign means that the temperature is below zero and it is too
cold. From 12˚c to 0˚c thus are 12 spaces which means 12 degree, then
from 0˚c to -9˚c there are 9 degrees. This shows a total of 12 + 9 or 21
degrees. That is, the temperature on January 10 was 21 degrees lower
than the temperature on December 31.
In answering the problem in temperature, always remember the steps:
What is ask, given, word clue, operation used, and a picture or
illustration to represent the word problem.

1.) Benjie had a headache, so he went to the clinic. The nurse got
his temperature. It was 2˚c above 37˚c. was he sick? What was
his new body temperature?

1. What is asked?
2. What are given?
3. What is the word clue?
4. What operation should be used?
5. Draw a picture to represent the word problem.
6. Change the word problem into a number sentence?
7. Write the solution?
8. Write the complete answer?

2.) The temperature of the atmosphere at 6:00am was 28˚c. By

12:00 noon, it becomes 34˚c. was there a decrease or increase in
temperature? By how many ˚c?

(Note: follow the steps in solving the problem in problem no. 1)

Let’s Do More

Solve the problem below:

1. The room thermometer read 19˚c. It is hot or cold?

2. Your temperature is 38˚c. What is your condition?

3. Last December, the class noted a temperature reading of 21˚c. In

manila, a day’s reading was 38.1˚c. How many degrees is the
difference in the two reading?

4. The average temperature in Montreal, Canada in July is 15˚c and

in January, -20˚c. What is the difference in average temperature in
January and in July?

Let’s Remember This

Temperature measure in degree Celsius ˚c

thermometer instrument used in measuring the hotness
and coldness of an object.
Boiling point of water - 100˚c - 212˚F
Freezing point of water - 0˚c - 32˚F
Normal Body temperature - 37˚c – 98.6˚F
Sometimes the temperature may be so cold that it goes
down below 0˚c. Below zero degree has the minus sign.
Ex. -1,-2,-3,-4,-5 to -20

- 66 -
In solving the problem in temperature, you may add or subtract to
get the exact answer.
To change or convert 0˚C to ˚F:
Given degrees Celsius multiplied by 1.8, constants add 32 and that is
constant = _________ ˚F
Ex.: Celsius change to Fahrenheit
37˚c x 1.8 + 32 = 98.6˚F

To change Fahrenheit to Celsius scale:

Ex.: 115˚F (-32 ÷ 1.8 = 46.11˚C
Subtract the given Fahrenheit by 32 constant then divide by 1.8
constant = _________ ˚C
How to get or solve the conversion of Celsius to Fahrenheit?
1/2 of 100˚ spaces in C = 1/2 of 180˚ spaces in F 50˚ spaces in
C = 90˚ in F.

Let’s Test Ourselves

Solve the problem;

1. If the temperature at two o’clock is 29.5˚C and falls 7˚C in five
hours, what will be the temperature be then?
2. Estela’s temperature this morning was 39.2˚C. Now her
temperature is 37.4˚C. What is the difference in her temperature.
3. Rica is sick in bed. Her temperature is 39.3˚C. Normal body
temperature is 37˚C. How much lower should temperature be in
order to get well?

- 67 -
4. If the temperature at six o’clock in the morning is 26.5˚C and
31˚C at noon, by how many degrees has it risen?
5. One day in Baguio city the temperature reading in the morning
was 25.6˚C. In the afternoon it was 22.8˚C. What was the change
in temperature? Did it become warmer or cooler?
Convert the following to Fahrenheit:
6. 92˚C = _________ ˚F
7. 38˚C = _________ ˚F
8. 40˚C = _________ ˚F
Convert the figure below to Celsius:
9. 212˚F = ________ ˚C
10. 150˚F = _______ ˚C

Let’s Consider This

If you got 8-10, congratulations! You may please proceed to the

next module.

If you got 7-8 do another exercises.

If you got below 5, review and study again the whole module.
