ACRYLICS IN CONSTRUCTION

• The term ‘acrylic’ refers to chemicals that contain the acryloyl group,
derived from acrylic acid, such as polyacrylonitrile and poly(methyl
methacrylate) (PMMA).

• Acrylics generally have good optical clarity, scratch resistance,

dimensional stability and rigidity.

• They do not deteriorate in sunlight and they have good adhesion, are
thermoplastic, easy to form and and easy to cut. However, they are
combustible, are not flexible, suffer from stress cracking and are not
resistant to solvents.

MANUFACTURING PROCESS
Acrylics are polyesters based on acrylic acid (propenoic acid -
CH2=CHCO2H) formed from the polymerisation of an alkyl acrylate
ester.(or) Acrylic plastic refers to a family of synthetic, or man-made,
plastic materials containing one or more derivatives of acrylic acid. The
most common acrylic plastic is polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA).

The polymers are manufactured from monomers that are formed from
the reactions of acrylic acids with alcohols.
• These are then polymerized using a radical initiator in a water
emulsion.

Raw Materials:
• Monomer: prepared by a reversible reaction between an acrylic acid
and an alcohol. Eg: ethyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate , butyl
acrylate, etc.
• Surfactant: substance composed of mutually repellent polar
and non-polar ends.

• Water: acts as a solvent for the surfactants and initiators, as

well as a heat transfer medium.

• Initiator: used are water soluble peroxidic salts such as

ammonium or sodium peroxydisulphate.

Acrylic plastic may be any plastic derived from acrylic compounds
such as acrylic acid or methacrylic acid. They generally have similar
properties and are commonly used in Plexiglas, lacquer and
adhesives.

Transparency
Acrylic plastic is extremely transparent and transmits 92 percent of
white light. This is equal to the transparency of the finest optical
glass.

Impact Resistance
Acrylic sheets (Plexiglas) have six to 17 times the impact resistance of
ordinary glass, depending on the specific preparation. Plexiglas also
breaks into relatively dull pieces compared to glass.
APPLICATIONS
• Transparent or translucent sheeting such as acrylic glass
(‘Plexiglass’ or ‘Perspex’).
• Opaque cladding and panel materials.
• Paints.
• Resins, sealants, adhesives and adhesive tapes
• Flashing materials.
• Concretes, mortars, renders and asphalt.

ADVANTAGES OF ACRYLIC PLASTIC

• Easily Fabricated and Shaped

• Weather Resistant - Retain Color
• Resistant to deterioration and
• Resistant to UV
• Come in higher thicknesses
• Unbreakable
• Sturdy
• Highly transparent
• Lighter than glass
• Acrylic is 50% Lighter than Glass, but Much Stronger
• Acrylic is Easy to Maintain
• Impact resistant
Acrylic has a tensile strength greater than
10,000 lbs. per square inch with impact resistance six to
17 times greater than ordinary glass.
Disadvantages of Acrylics:

• The first disadvantage of using acrylics is that it scratches more easily

than glass. This means that it will need more care when handling to
reduce the rate of scratching. However, if it accidentally gets any
scratches, it is easy for you to restore it to its original form. All that you
need to do is polish the acrylic to get rid of the scratches. Never ever
use sandpaper on acrylics because what you will get is more scratches.
You should take extra care if you are cleaning acrylic with rough pads.

• As compared to most other synthetics, acrylics are less strong and are
not resistant to matting.

• The other not so good thing about acrylics is that they are easily stained
by grease and oil. However, it is easy to clean these with water and a
mild detergent. With these, you will not leave any scratches on the
sheets.

• The other disadvantage of using acrylic is distortion. This happens

because acrylics bend easily during construction.
• The other drawback that you will have to deal with once you have
decided to switch to acrylics is the expense. Acrylic especially if you
decide to go for custom styles for example when construction
aquariums will cost you much more than glass. However, the truth is
that acrylic plastic is worth the cost. With proper care and
maintenance, it will not let you down regardless of where you are
using it. At the end of the day, the end result will be more attractive,
have a better quality and top of the art workmanship.

• The other minor disadvantages of using acrylic are that their impact
resistance is not at par, they have a poor solvent resistance, flexible
grades of acrylics are not available, acrylic is subject to cracking
through stress and have a low continuous service temperature.
