MIDTERM EXAM IN VALUES EDUCATION AND SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT

1. Distinguish values with virtue.

 Virtue according to George Sher is a character trait that is for some reason desirable or worth
having. While according to Aristotle, virtue means excellence. Virtue is based on excellence of
function, soul is the focus and it has practical wisdom.
 Values are based on needs; it is re-examined, different/relative and hierarchical. These are
expressions of the ultimate ends, goals or purposes of social action considered desirable and
important by members of society. These also represent the social conscience internalized and
integrated within themselves by the individual members of society. These are something that a
person cherishes and esteem as important to him.
2. Why is understanding Philippine values important? Justify your answer.
Understanding the Philippine values is important because it helps every individual to boost their
intra and interpersonal relationships in the society. Our values help us also to grow and develop. They
help us to create the future we want to experience. The decisions we make are a reflection of our
values and beliefs and they are always directed towards a specific purpose. When we use our values
to make decisions, we make a deliberate choice to focus on what is important to us.
3. Make up a list of 12 virtues/values which you think an ideal person should possess.

5. From your own view, identify 2 Philippine values that differentiate us from others of the world.
Explain.
Two Philippine values that differentiate us from others of the world:
 Optimism and resiliency which gives us the sense of hopefulness and confidence about the future.
Even if a Filipino faces many challenges he is still confident that he can overcome all of these
challenges.
 Concept of utang na loob which teaches us to be grateful, to look back at where we came from.
6. Define Development. What are the schools of thoughts and approaches to development?
Development is a word that lacks a universally accepted definition. Different people interpret the
word differently. For some it may have economic connotation and it is defined economic growth. From
the economic standpoint, development means growth; it means the ability to mature and potential to do
something. Another definition of development by Dudley Seers (1969) is when a country experiences a
reduction or elimination of poverty, inequality, and unemployment. While according to Edgar Owens
(1987) suggested that development is when there is development of people (human development and not
development of things) There are 3 schools of thoughts for development and these are:
1. Economic view point- from this perspective, development is an effort that seeks to improve the
economic well-being and quality of life for a community.
2. Development is equal to economic growth and social change.
3. Ethical Values which explain the quality and quantity of life.
7. Cite the core values of development according to Denis Goulet and the United Nations.
The Core Values of Development according to Prof. Denis Goulet and the United Nations are as
follows:
•Life sustenance is the ability to meet basic needs.
People have certain basic needs which are necessary for survival; they consist of food, shelter,
clothing, etc. These things should be provided because if not, this would represent to under-
development.
•Self-esteem- a sense of worth and self-respect. It means that each people should be given his due
respect and due right, when a man will be considered man and he is given due place he will be able to
contribute well to economic development.
•Freedom from servitude/to be able to choose- it is concerned with human freedom. By freedom, it
means the emancipation from alienating material conditions of life, and from social servitude to
nature, ignorance and other misery.
8. From the viewpoint of development, cite the typologies of nations of the world.
From the viewpoint of development, the typologies of nations of the world are:
•primitive or modern
•civilized or uncivilized
•literate or non-literate
•simple or technologically advanced
Other classification uses the following terms:
•underdeveloped countries
•developing countries
•developed countries
The Three (3) Worlds
1. First world
2. Second world
3. Third world
9. Why is Japan called Asia’s industrial giant? What factors contribute to the steady growth of
Japan’s economy?
Japan is called Asia's industrial giant because they have high domestic investment in industry and
infrastructure among the countries in Asia and the factors that contribute to the steady growth of
Japan's economy is its agricultural productivity which is high enough to sustain industrial production.
Their investment-led idea is the reason why Japan's economic conditions grow bigger. Domestic
investment in industry and infrastructure was the driving force behind the growth in Japanese output.
Japan has been one of the world's leaders in the modernization of industry. Japan's heavy industry
reaches nearly every world market for metal and steel goods and mechanized tools. Their concurrent
developments in electronics, technology, and computer control have allowed them to simultaneously
develop some of the world's most sophisticated automation.

RODRIGO ROA DUTERTE

President
Republic of the Philippines
Malacañang Palace

Dear Hon. President Duterte,

Greetings!

The reason why I write you is because of a vast environmental issue that we are facing nowadays. I
understand that this problem is caused by human activities, lack of concern, discipline and above all lack
of love for nature.

In line with this, I would like to suggest a solution regarding this matter. If we are going to solve the most
important environmental issues of our time, we should make programs and projects that is very useful. I
suggest, we should educate our people because there are some of them lack the knowledge on how to
solve environmental problems. It could only be possible if we will include this in our educational
curriculum. We need to discipline our students with how to segregate properly their garbage, clean the
surroundings every day, and not to cut trees in the mountains. We need to increase the level of their
environmental awareness and encourage them that if we try to solve the problems in our own little way,
something can be done about it.

Again, my suggestion Mr. President is includes this activity in our curriculum, let our students learn from
school on how to save mother earth and we'll let them to conduct a mandatory community service.

I believe that by educating the youth, environmental issues can be lessened.

SHORT TRP (THOUGHT REFLECTION PAPER) IN VALUES EDUCATION AND

SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT
Becoming a Person of Value

Our life experiences can either valuable or useless. Having years of experience at doing
something doesn't mean that's what the people needs or wants. What people need is the value
your experience brings to them. The question is how to become a person a value?

To become a person of value you should strive to be better than you were yesterday,
strive to become a better person and be good at all times. Be committed on your own personal
development, do things that help you grow in wisdom, knowledge and understanding.

Live with integrity, it is not an outdated idea rather it is an upgrading of living without
regrets. A person of value does not compromise values that are based on eternal or timeless
principles. The root integrity bears the fruit of respect, dignity and trust, without integrity. Value
is lost. Your commitment to live a life of integrity sets you up for a victory in the moments of
crisis.

Another, take care of your character because the value of character positively impacts the
lives of others, it attracts respect and trust from others. If you take care of your character, your
reputation will take care of itself.

Lastly, keep your eyes on your own values because if you do it you will end up both
successful and up both successful and a good person.
