Good morning class! Students: Good morning Ma’am!

Who among you remembered the topic last

meeting? Yes, Jean. It’s all about the Tenses of the verb.

Very good. And what are those tenses of Past Tense, Present Tense and Future
the verb? Cloe. Tense.
Thank you Cloe!

What is past tense, Louis? Past tense is used to talk about past habits
and generalizations.
Alright, how about Present tense, Daphnie? Present tense is used to show time,
condition that exists now.
Awesome! And last, Future tense?
Sebastian. Future Tense is a verb tense that’s used to

Alright, it’s good to know that everyone
learned a lot from our last discussion.

So, let’s have an activity before we start. Students: Okay, Ma’am.

E. Presentation

Teacher’s Activity Students’ Response

Who among you are familiar with the man

I know him Ma’am!
in the picture?

Yes, Ianna. You are raising your hand.

He is Jose Garcia Villa. He is the one who
wrote the poem “First, a Poem Must Be
Magical”.

Very good. Thank you. Another?

He is considered by many as the foremost
Filipino poet in English.
Alright! Thank you.

Jose Garcia Villa was a Filipino poet,

literary critic, short story writer, and a
painter. He is known to have introduced the
"reversed consonance rhyme scheme" in
writing poetry, as well as the extensive use
of punctuation marks—especially commas,
which made him known as the Comma
Poet.

What did Villa use as a pen name in his

works? Yes, Lizzie. He used the pen name “Doveglion”.

And his pen name is derived from what? He derives his pen name from "Dove,
Eagle, and Lion.

Exactly! And why is his name derived from

in these animals? Aries. To present a portrait of the poet: gentle as a
dove, free as an eagle, and fierce as a lion.
So, he used this pen name based on the
characters he derived from himself.
Any questions with regards to the author? Students: None Ma’am.

If none, let’s now proceed to our

discussion.

F. Discussion

Teacher’s Activity Students’ Response

Before we start our discussion, I have here
the whole text of the poem. I’ll read it first Students: Okay Ma’am.
and you do the second reading. Okay?

First, a Poem Must Be Magical

Jose Garcia Villa

First, a poem must be magical,

Then musical as a sea-gull.
It must be a brightness moving
And hold secret a bird’s flowering.
It must be slender as a bell, (The students will read the poem aloud.)
And it must hold fire as well.
It must have the wisdom of bows
And it must kneel like a rose.
It must be able to hear
The luminance of dove and deer.
It must be able to hide
What it seeks, like a bride.
And over all I would like to hover
God, smiling from the poem’s cover.

Alright, thank you!

Okay, after reading the poem, what do you

think is the meaning of it? What comes in
your mind?
Yes, Angela. The poem is a presentation of the
characteristics of a great poem. It is an
instructional poem about writing a poem.
Very good observation Angela!

This poem poetically describes what a

poem should be. Villa uses impossible
lyrical standards for the poem, which
means that he thinks poems have to
transcend the boundaries of realism and be
fantastical, or magical.

So, what are the obvious formal elements

of the poem?
Yes. Mikhaella. Meter and rhyme. Ma’am.

Good!

Actually, there are number of formal

elements in the poem. The most obvious
elements are meter and rhyme.

What is meter and rhyme?

Zara, you’re raising your hand. Meter is systematically arranged and
measured rhythm in verse, while rhyme is a
composition in verse that rhymes.
Thank you. So, meter is a regular pattern
of stressed and unstressed syllable in
poetry. And rhyme is the repetition of
similar sounds at the end of words.

Rhyme has 3 kinds.

The first one is what? Students: Internal rhyme

Very good, Internal rhyme occurs within

the line.

The next one is? Students: End rhyme

Yes, End rhyme occurs at the end of lines.

And last?
Alright! Alternate rhyme occurs at the end Students: Alternate rhyme
of every line.
Rhyme scheme is the arrangement of rhyme
What is rhyme scheme, Jireh? in a stanza or a poem.

Okay! In the poem the rhyme scheme is

even more regular with rhyming couplet
(AA, BB, CC, etc.).

What is couplet? Michael.

A couplet is a pair of rhyming lines or
Alright, very good! verse.

In the poem, Villa uses different poetic

elements or figure of speech.

What is figure of speech again, Zenen? Figures of speech are used to express words
more than dictionary meaning.
And what are examples of figure of
speech?  Alliteration
 Simile
 Metaphor
 Personification

What do you think are the poetic elements

Alliteration, Ma’am.
that the author used?

Alright, what is alliteration? Alliteration is the repetition of initial sounds

at the beginning of words.

What is the example of alliteration in the

Example is “luminance of dove and deer”
poem?
because of the repeated “d” sound at the
beginning of “dove and deer.”

Very good observation!

Dove and deer is the example of
alliteration because of the repetition of
initial sounds.

So, what are the other poetic elements?

Simile, Ma’am.
Aedrianne.
What is simile? Simile is a figure of speech that is
comparing two unlike things that is often
introduced by like or as.

That’s right! So, what is the example of For example is, “slender as a bell or like a
simile in the poem? rose”.

Very good! And also “musical as a sea

gull”.

And the other poetic elements, Jose? Metaphor.

Yes, you’re right! Because metaphor is a

comparison between two unlike things that
have some quality in common.

What is the example of metaphor in the

poem? Me, Ma’am!

Yes, Marielle.
For example is, “it must hold fire as well”.
Awesome!

And also the last poetic elements?

Josh. Personification, Ma’am.

Then, what is personification?

Personification is a representation of a thing
as a person just like for example in the line,
“it must kneel like a rose”.
Very good! Personification is a figure of
speech that gives human qualities to
inanimate objects as human.

Actually class, the poem is also known as

“Lyric 17” because it contains 14 lines in
English version and also considered as a
sonnet, because sonnet is a poem of
fourteen lines.
Villa was a twentieth-century poet who
combined progressive techniques with
formalism.

What is the poem’s general message? The message of the poem is when you tend
to write a poem, it should gain interest of
the readers and it should be captivating to
the eyes and it should show a sense of
magic in the poem.
Alright! Very good!
So, do you have questions about the
Students: None, Ma’am!
poem?

If none, then let’s have an activity.

G. Enrichment Activity
The class will be divided into 5 with 8 members. Each group will be assigned to do the
task. They will be given 7 minutes to finish their output afterwards they will pass it.

Directions: For your activity, I have 3 boxes here. In the 1st box is the poetry form (e.g.
sonnet, lyric, narrative, ballad, haiku), 2nd box is the figurative language (e.g. metaphor,
personification, simile, irony, allegory), then last box is word sounds (e.g. assonance,
alliteration, onomatopoeia, repetition, consonance). Each group representative will pick
one card from the three boxes. Afterwards, you are challenged to write a poem based on
the card you have picked.

Teacher’s Activity Students’ Response

What have you learned from the discussion
for today?
Yes, Alessandra. I have learned how to use those figurative
language, word sounds and the poetry form
by creating and writing a good poem.
Why a poem must be magical? Nikko.
A poem must be magical since it must
stimulate one’s senses as it widens your
perspective and uses your imagination
Very good class! when writing.
I hope everyone learned a lot from today’s
discussion.

I. Evaluation

Teacher’s Activity
For your last activity, create your own poem by using rhyme scheme and figure of
speech. You only have 10 minutes to do the task.
