Calculation for Differential Settlement

Figure: Individual Column Loading on Strip Footing

Figure: Stress distribution of Foundation in Soil.

From soil test report,

Water level = 5ʹ , Pʹc = 2 ksf

Unit weight of soil, Wet ɣsat =135 pcf

Dry ɣd = 109 pcf

Allowable bearing capacity, qall = 1.171 ksf

Initial void ratio e0 = .68

Consolidation compression index, Cc = .21

Data for consolidation and void ratio are near about same for all level.

So, pʹo = 5x109 + 2(135-62.4) + 10(135-62.4) = 1.41

Ptop = (DL+LL)/Area of foundation = (1504.1+689.5) kip/10x192.58 sft = 1.14 ksf

Pmid = (DL+LL)/Area of stress at mid of release zone = (1504.1+689.5)/(10+10)x(192.58+10) = .54 ksf

Pbottom = (1504.1+689.5)/(10+20)x(192.58+20) = .34 ksf

⸫ΔPavg = 1/6(1.14+4x.54+.343) = .607 ksf

Over consolidation compression index, Cr = 0.017+0.102Cc = .017+.102x.21 = .0364

pʹo + ΔPavg = 1.41+ .60 = 2.01 > Pʹc = 2 ksf(soil test)

⸫Sc = Ho /(1+eo)x(Chxlog Pʹc/ pʹo + Cc xlog (pʹo + Δp)/ Pʹc)

= 20x12/1+.68 (.0364xlog2/1.41 + .21log(.60+1.41)/2) = 142.85x (.0055+.00045)

= .778 in <1.8 = 45 mm

We are considering zero settlement on pile. Allowing settlement on strip foundation. Form BNBC
Article # 3.7.3.3 to Table # 6.33 we can find L/180 = (27*12/180) = 1.8" = 45 mm

L = C/C distance between Grid 1 and 2.
