11 31 505 Adjusting camshaft timing (M57TU)

Special tools required:

00 9 120

11 2 300

11 6 321

11 6 322

11 6 480

Necessary preliminary tasks:

Remove vacuum pump.

Remove cylinder head cover.

Crank engine with special tool 11 6 480 to

firing TDC position of first cylinder.Caution!
Do not crank the engine back.

Exhaust camshaft (A) and inlet camshaft (E)

point with their cams (1) in direction of travel to
right.

Secure crankshaft in TDC position with special

tool 11 2 300 .
Illustrations show M57.
Caution!
Do not turn the engine back.
Special tool 11 2 300 must be removed
before engine is started.

Position special tool 11 6 321 on inlet camshaft

and secure with special tool 11 6 322 (1).

When releasing camshaft screw connections,

grip camshafts with a wrench at hexagons.
Slacken screws (1) and (2).
Note:
Partially tighten screws (1) and (2)
without play, sprocket wheels can still be
rotated with respect to camshaft.

Secure special tools 11 6 321 and 11 6 322 .

Tighten down inlet sprocket wheel with special
tool 00 9 120 .
Note:
When tightening screw connection, grip
camshaft at hexagon.

Tightening specification, 11 31 4AZ.

Secure special tools 11 6 321 and 11 6 322 .

Tighten down exhaust gear wheel with special
tool 00 9 120 .
Note:
When tightening screw connection, grip
camshaft at hexagon.

Tightening specification, 11 31 4AZ.

Using special tool 11 6 480 , crank engine

twice in direction of engine rotation until first
cylinder is back in TDC firing position.
Check timing again.
Caution!
Do not turn the engine back.

Secure special tools 11 6 321 and 11 6 322 on

inlet camshaft. Note:
Special tool 11 6 321 must lie flush on cylinder
head.

Secure special tools 11 6 321 and 11 6 322 on

exhaust camshaft.Note:
Special tool 11 6 321 must lie flush on
cylinder head.

Remove all special tools.

Assemble engine.
