Sewage Treatment and Disposal Assignment For 3rd Year CoTM Max. of 5 students per Group
1. Write the working principle of RBC, TF, ASP and SP in wastewater treatment? (1-page max.for all)
2. Enlist at list 3 main units under each of the following and write their working principle shortly?
Preliminary treatment
Primary treatment
Secondary treatment. (1/2 page muximum Answer for all)
3. The sewage is flowing @ 4.5Million liters per day from a primary clarifier to a standard rate
trickling filter. The 5-day BOD of the influent is 160mg/l. The value of the adopted organic
loading is to be 160 gm/m3/day, and surface loading 2000 l/m2/day. Determine the volume of
the filter and its depth. Also calculate the efficiency of this filter unit. Assume 30% of BOD
load removed in primary sedimentation and Rf=1(no recirculation)

5. Estimate the BOD removal efficiency and effluent BOD5 of a two-stage trickling filter using the NRC
formula with the following given conditions.
Wastewater temperature 200C
Plant flow Q 7570 m3/d
BOD5 in raw waste 300 mg/L
Volume of filter (each) 453 m3
Depth of filter 2.13 m
Recirculation for filter 1 1.5Q
Recirculation for filter 2 0.8Q
11. Determine the size of a two-stage trickling filter using the NRC equations. Assume both filters have
the same efficiency of BOD5 removal and the same recirculation ratio. Other conditions are as follows.
Wastewater temperature 200C
Wastewater flow Q 3785 m3/d
Influent BOD5 195 mg/L
Design effluent BOD5 20 mg/L
Depth of each filter 2m
Recirculation’s for filters 1 and 2, r1= r2 1.8
