My Learning Essentials

Change is inevitable in curriculum development. To be relevant, we need to change,

a change for the better. This can be obviously seen through effective implementation. What
is curriculum implementation? Let us look into the different definitions.

Curriculum implementation means -Teaching what has been written in

putting into practice the written the lesson plan
curriculum that has been designed -Implementing means using the
in syllabi, course studies, curricular plan as guide to engage the learners
guides and subjects. in the teacher-learning process

The transition of Teacher-Centered

Approach to Learner-Centered Approach
One of the changes I have observed is
the approach from Teacher-Centered to
Learner Centered Approach in the
Curriculum. The focus of instruction is
the students; hence its aim is to develop
the independence of the learner by
making the learner active in his learning
path.
Activity 2 These are the categories of curriculum change.
Get samples/situations for these categories from the school you visited.

Activity 3 Answer the question briefly. Why do we need to change the curriculum from time to
time?

Curriculum is considered the “heart” of any learning institution which means that schools or
universities cannot exist without a curriculum. With its importance in formal education, the curriculum
has become a dynamic process due to the changes that occur in our society. It changes as the time goes by
in order to keep pace with the learners’ needs. We need to consider the learners’ needs, learning style and
their different intelligences. For example, in 1950s, there was a lot more emphasis on home economics
and industrial arts type of things, more emphasis on simply memorizing facts and rules. Now, the
technology plays a vital role in society. Thus, our curriculum should also be technologically equipped so
that it could produce technologically literate learners and thus the students can use the technology to their
advantage. With technology shifts and an economy based on different skills, if we have same curriculum
it would be a catastrophe. Curriculum has change to meet the different needs that we have now.
