1.0 SCOPE
1.1 This guide covers guidelines for carrying out a basic study for Electrically Operated
Travelling (EOT) and Manually Operated Travelling (MOT) cranes.
1.2 For format, structure and other guidelines for preparation of basic study refer TCE.M9-
PCS-25. The objective of the basic study is to select a cost effective and appropriate
crane. The basic study shall form the basis for procurement of crane and detailed
engineering.
(h) Whether crane use is irregular, regular light, regular intermittent, irregular
intensive or regular intensive as per guidelines given in IS 13834 Part 1.
(i) Whether crane is expected to hoist Safe Working Load (SWL) very rarely and
light loads normally or SWL fairly frequently and moderate loads normally or
SWL frequently and heavy loads normally or regularly loaded close to the SWL
?
(j) Approximate hook approach for the main hook and auxiliary hook at either end
of long and cross travel motions
ISSUE

(l) Requirement of attachments such as grab bucket, lifting magnet, digital display
of actual load lifted etc.
(m) Requirement of load limiting devices to stop the hoisting motion, if load to be
lifted is more than the Safe Working Load (SWL).
2.2 Familiarise with General Arrangement (GA) drawings of the area in which crane is to be
installed.
EOT crane may be selected under any of the following conditions. These conditions
may be discussed and decided with concerned groups and project engineer.
(a) When the frequency of operation is more than 5 times per hour
(b) When the duration of operation is more than 15 minutes, i.e. operator has to
hoist the load, move the load, place the load in a non-stop manner for more
than 15 minutes
(c) When the load is to be handled at a specific speed for performing cyclic
operation
(d) When the load is to be lifted at a speed which is not possible with MOT crane.
Generally, 10.0 M/min speed of hand chain movement may be possible by
manual operation. Considering velocity ratio for the specific case, speed of load
chain and load movement may be found out.
(e) When the clear path for movement is not available for operator as well as for
the load
MOT crane may be selected considering following conditions. These conditions may be
discussed and decided with concerned groups and project engineer.
(b) When the frequency of operation is less than 5 times per hour
ISSUE

(e) Clear path is available for movement of operator as well as for the load.
Overhead crane travels on the runway girders mounted on columns. Refer appendix 1
for various technical parameters.
Underslung crane travels on flanges of runway girders fixed on the bottom of roof or
truss. This facilitates installation of cranes in sheds already existing with little
modifications. These cranes require less headroom clearance (approx. 0.4 M). These
cranes are generally used for capacity upto 10 T. Refer appendix 2 for various technical
parameters.
EOT and MOT cranes shall have single girder or double girder depending on capacity,
lift, span and load handling attachment. The selection shall be based on following :
(a) For cranes having capacity upto 2 T and span upto 14 M, single girder crane
may be selected. In case capacity is more than 10 T or span is more than 14 M,
it is preferable to have double girder crane. For cranes having capacity between
2 and 10 T and span less than 14 M, selection of single or double girder may be
made based on headroom clearance, lift requirements and considering cost etc.
(b) Double girder crane with same headroom clearance as that of single girder
crane can achieve more lift as hook can enter between bridge girders. This may
be helpful in the installations where height restriction limits the lift.
(c) In case of cranes with lifting magnet or grab bucket, it is preferable to have
double girder crane.
Cranes are classified based on class of utilization (maximum number of operating cycles)
and state of loading. IS 13834 Part 1 and 5, both shall be referred for deciding crane
classification and mechanism class of crane.
ISSUE

In case of EOT cranes, selection of crane control mainly depends on type of service,
severity, size and type of loads, operating speeds, the degree of precision required,
availability of clear path for operator movement etc. Based on these factors, crane
controls such as pendent push button station or cabin or radio (remote) control shall be
selected.
Pendent push button stations are used for controlling the crane from floor. This requires
clear path for operator movement.
Radio controls may be more suitable for cranes operating in hazardous or radioactive
area or in areas where operator cannot enter or work.
4.1 LIFT
(b) Height of tallest equipment (Y) over which equipment (X) is to be handled
(c) Clearance between the equipment (X) and (Y). Generally 0.2 to 0.5 M
clearance may be considered.
ISSUE
R4
(d) Sling height = tan 60° × Half of width of equipment (X) including lugs. Included
angle of sling shall be considered as 60º.
(e) Dimension between operating floor on which equipment (X) is located and
basement on which equipment is to be lowered, if any.
4.2 SPAN
(a) Clear inside dimension i.e. distance between inner faces of two columns.
Notes :
1. For cabin operated cranes having capacity 40 T and above, 500 mm wide
walkways shall be considered on either side. In case wall is existing on one side,
only handrailing shall be considered. In case factory inspector’s manual in
particular area stipulates this requirement for even smaller capacity than 40 T,
walkway of 500 mm shall be considered.
IS 3177 shall be referred for calculating power required for hoisting motion, long
(bridge) travel and cross (trolley) travel. After arriving at the power requirement, motor
rating shall be selected as next higher size of motor available.

Where,
M = Mass of the rated load on the hook plus weight of the hook block
and wire rope in tonnes. Weight of the hook block and wire rope
shall be assumed as :
6 % of rated load upto 10 T
5 % of rated load above 10 T and upto 20 T
4 % of rated load above 20 T
Where,
M = Weight moved in tonnes. In case of long travel, M = rated load
plus weight of crane and in case of cross travel, it is rated load
plus weight of trolley. Refer appendices 1 and 2 for weight of
crane and trolley
ISSUE

An appendix covering list of cranes with tag numbers, designation, major design
parameters and estimated motor ratings shall be furnished.
Wheel load in tonnes may be indicated in basic study to facilitate civil department for
further engineering. Appendices 1 and 2 shall be referred for indicating wheel load.
Manufacturer’s catalogues may also be referred.
If included in TCE scope of work, cost estimates for various alternatives considered
may be furnished.
