Η πρώτη αναφορά πέρα των βιβλικών Εβραίων της λέξης Ιερουσαλήμ χρονολογείται από τον 6ο ή 7ο αιώνα
π.Χ.[15][16] και ανακαλύφθηκε στο Χιρμπέτ Μπέιτ Λέι το 1961. Η επιγραφή αναφέρει «Είμαι ο Γιαχβέ ο
Θεός, θα αποδεχθώ τις πόλεις της Ιουδαίας και θα λυτρώσω την Ιερουσαλήμ»,[17][18][19] ενώ άλλοι
μελετητές την αποδίδουν ως «Ο Γιαχβέ είναι ο Θεός όλης της γης. Τα βουνά της Ιουδαίας του ανήκουν,
στον Θεό της Ιερουσαλήμ».[20][21]
Σαλίμ ή Σαλήμ ήταν το όνομα του θεού του λυκόφωτος στη θρησκεία των Χαναανιτών, του οποίου το
όνομα βασίζεται στην ίδια ρίζα Σ-Λ-Μ από την οποία προέρχεται η εβραϊκή λέξη για την «ειρήνη» (Σαλάμ
ή Σαλόμ στα σύγχρονα αραβικά και εβραϊκά).[22][23] Οπότε, το όνομα μπορούσε να ετυμολογηθεί ως
«Πόλη της Ειρήνης»[12][24] ή «Καταφυγίο της Ειρήνης»,[25][26] εναλλακτικά «Όραμα της Ειρήνης» για
κάποιους Χριστιανούς συγγραφείς.[27] Η κατάληξη -αγίμ δηλώνει το διττό, οδηγώντας στο συμπέρασμα ότι
το όνομα Ιερουσαλαγίμ αναφέρεται στο γεγονός ότι η πόλη είναι κτισμένη πάνω σε δύο λόφους.[28][29]
Ο πιο αρχαίος οικισμός της Ιερουσαλήμ, ο οποίος ιδρύθηκε την εποχή του χαλκού στο λόφο πάνω από την
πηγή Γκιχόν, σύμφωνα με τη Βίβλο ονομαζόταν Ιεβούς.[30] Αρχικά ονομαζόταν οχυρό Σιών, αλλά ο Δαυίδ
την ονόμασε Πόλη του Δαβίδ,[31] και έτσι ήταν γνωστή στην αρχαιότητα.[32][33] Το όνομα Σιών αρχικά
χρησιμοποιούταν μόνο για ένα τμήμα της πόλης, αλλά στη συνεχεία έφτασε να σημαίνει όλη τη πόλη και τη
βιβλική Γη του Ισραήλ. Στα ελληνικά και στα λατινικά, το όνομα της πόλης είναι Ιεροσόλυμα ή
Ιερουσαλήμ, συσχετίζοντας το όνομα ετυμολογικά με τη λέξη «ιερός».[34][35]
