5.7.DESIGN OF BASE SLAB
If there were no sub-soil water, only nominal reinforcement would be required.
However, because of saturated subsoil, there will be uplift pressure on the
bottom slab of the magnitude, pu = γwh = 17.00 kN/m2
Assume thickness of base slab,tb = 250 mm

5.7.1.Check for floatation

The whole tank must be checked against floatation when the tank is empty.
Breadth of the base slab,Bb = B+2T = 4000+ 2*450 = 4900 mm
Length of the base slab,Lb = L+2T = 4000+ 2*450 = 4900 mm
Total upward floatation force = Pu = pu*Bb*Lb = 17*4.9*4.9
= 408.17 kN
Weight of base slab = Bb*Lb*tb*unit weight of reinforced concrete
= 4.9*4.9*0.25*25 = 150.0625 kN
Weight of walls = (2*L+4*T+2*B)*T*D*unit weight of reinforced concrete
= 400.5 kN
Total downward force = Weight of base slab + weight of walls
= 550.5625 kN.
Factor of safety against floatation = 1.2 IS 3370(part-I)
Clause 7.2.b.1
Downward force/upward force = 550.5625/408.17 = 1.34886 > 1.2
Therefore provide projection of base slab beyond the face of the vertical wall
by an amount 'x' m alround, so that weight of soil column supported by the
projections will provide additional downward force.
Weight of the soil supported by projection = (2*L+4*T+2*B+4*T)*x*(d*γd)
= (2*4+4*0.45+2*4+4*0.45)*x*(1.7*18)
= 599.76 x
Weight of base slab = (L+2*T+2*x)*(B+2*T+2*x)*tb*unit weight of reinforced
concrete.
= (4+2*0.45+2*x)*(4+2*0.45+2*x)*0.25*25
= (4.9+2x)*(4.9+2x)*6.25

Weight of walls = 400.5 kN
Total uplift force = (L+2*T+2*x)*(B+2*T+2*x)*pu

Multiplying total upward force with factor of safety for floatation and equating

Weight of walls = 400.5 kN
Weight of base slab = x2 +
25*0.16+122.5*0.4+150.0625 = 203.0625 kN.
Weight of soil supported by projection = 599.76*0.4 = 239.904 kN.
Total downward force = 400.5+203.0625+239.904 = 843.4665 kN.
Total uplift force = 68*0.16+333.2*0.4+408.17
= 552.33 kN.
Downward force / total uplift force = 843.4665/552.33
= 1.527 > 1.2
OK
Length of base slab = (L+2*T+2*x) = 5.7 m

Breadth of base slab = (B+2*T+2*x) = 5.7 m

Weight of walls = 400.50 kN

Weight of base slab = length*breadth*tb*unit weight of reinforced
concrete.
= 5.7*5.7*0.25*25 = 203.0625 kN
Weight of water = (4*4*1.7)*10 = 272 kN
Total weight = 400.5+203.0625+272 = 875.56 kN.
Upward pressure = Total weight / area of base slab
= 875.56/(5.7*5.7) = 26.949 kN/m2
Effective Length of base slab = L+T = 4+0.45 = 4.65 m
Effective Breadth of base slab = B+T = 4+0.45 = 4.65 m
length/breadth = 4.65/4.65 = 1 < 2

5.10.DESIGN OF BASE SLAB

If there were no sub-soil water, only nominal reinforcement would be required.
However, because of Water table below , assume uplift pressure on the
bottom slab of the magnitude, pu = γwh = 10*1.8 = 18.50 kN/m2
Assume thickness of base slab,tb = 650 mm

5.10.1.Check for floatation

The whole tank must be checked against floatation when the tank is empty.
Breadth of the base slab,Bb = B+2T = 8000+ 2*250 = 8500 mm
Length of the base slab,Lb = L+2T = 9000+ 2*250 = 9500 mm
Total upward floatation force = Pu = pu*Bb*Lb = 18.5*8.5*9.5

Total downward force = Weight of base slab + weight of walls

Clause 7.2.b.1
Downward force/upward force = 2055.9375/1493.875 = 1.376 > 1.2
Therefore provide projection of base slab beyond the face of the vertical wall
by an amount 'x' m alround, so that weight of soil column supported by the
projections will provide additional downward force.
Weight of the soil supported by projection = (2*L+4*T+2*B+4*T)*x*(d*γd)
= (2*9+4*0.25+2*8+4*0.25)*x*(3.2*20)

Prilimary Section details:
###
Basic value of span to effective depth of slab

Effective depth required = d = 131 mm IS 456 2000
Overall thickness of slab assumed= 150 mm

Diameter of Main reinforcement-Ly= 8 mm 300-DC-01
Diameter of distributor steel -Lx= 8 mm αx
Effective depth provided along longer span= 108 mm ###
Effective depth provided along shorter span 116 mm ###
Thickness of Floor Finish= 0 mm ###
Boundary conditions: ###
###
Four Edges Discontinuous
Calculation of effective span: ###

Beam of Width 0 mm support the slab ###

Width of support= 0 m
###
I) Along longer diretion,ly
if Ly/12>0 then Effective span will,be lesser of As per Cl.22.2 b) of IS
456 2007
a) Clear span + effective depth of slab= 4.308
As per Cl.22.2a) of IS 456
b) C/C of supports= 4.2 2000

Hence Effective span along longer direction= 4.2

II) Along shorter diretion,lx
if Lx/12>0 then Effective span will be lesser of, As per Cl.22.2 b) of IS
456 2007
a) Clear span + effective depth of slab= 4.316 As per Cl.22.2a) of IS 456
b) C/C of supports= 4.2 2000
Hence Effective span along shorter direction= 4.2

Check for one way:

Ratio of effective ly/lx= 1 <2 hence design as two way slab As per Table 26 of IS 456
2000
Calculation of loading:
Critical condition for Base slab design will be Tank full condition when no
uplift pressure is considered.
Upward pressure due to dead wt = 26.95 kN/m²

Calculation of Bending Moment(BM):

Bending moment coefficients as per IS 456 2000 is adopted
For ly/lx ratio = 1
BENDING MOMENT M, kN-m
At continous edge At Mid Span
BM Coeff. BM BM Coeff. BM
Coeff-αx 0.000 0.00 0.056 39.93 As per Table 12 of IS 456
Coeff-αy 0.000 0.00 0.056 39.93 2000

Maximum design Bending moment =Md= 39.9 kN-m

Check for Slab depth adequacy:

a) Limiting Moment of resistance of the section ( MOR) is given by

where, Limiting neutral axis depth Xu,max/d= 0.48

Assumed width of the section= 1000 mm
Effective depth along shorter direction= 116 mm
Hence Liming moment= Mu = 46.41 kN-m > Design moment,Md

b) On equating Design moment in the above equation,

The required effective depth of section= d= 108 mm
Provided effective depth= d = 116 mm
Provided Depth of slab is SAFE for carrying Design moment
HENCE SAFE

Calculation of Short span Reinforcement:
