INTRODUCTION
“If happy little blue birds fly, beyond the rainbow, why, oh why cant I? This is a line from
the song “Somewhere over the rainbow “ in the Theater adaptation of “Wizard of Oz” , It was-
thought to be a song of a young girl named Dorothy dreaming for a bigger life then become an
anthem for an entire community.

“Somewhere over the Rainbow” become an anthem for homosexuals at the year 1994
who perceived themselves as belonging to a despered minority. It bring hope for the
community of LGBTQ especially those who experience social discrimination and difficulties in
their that the bad times will one day over.

Philippines is considered as a gayfriendly nation, but many homosexual especially

students are experiencing disgust and hostility from other people and it affects their studies and
social interaction with other people-they are also facing difficulties in their life much as having
family problems being bullied and harassed that is most homosexual student are dealing with
depression.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

According to Poirier, Mattheis, Tarpkin, (2017) “Student in K-12 school who are attracted
to the same gender (lesbian, gay) attracted to people of the same or other gender (bisexual),or
identify as a gender different than the one they were assigned at birth (transgender),lesbian
,gay ,bisexual ,and transgender (LGBT) young people have historically experienced vulnerability
in school because of challenges such as invisibility in school curriculum ,peer and staff
rejection ,harassment and violence ,and will to effectively address bias and fosier inclusive
school enviroment.

As stated by Edgar T. (2017), in the Philippines students who are lesbian, gay, bisexual

and transgender (LGBT) too ofter find that that their schooling experience is imarred by
bullying, discrimination, lack of access to LGBT –related information ,and in some cases,
physical or sexual assault. In 2012,the Department of Education (PEPED),which overseas
primary and secondary school, enacted a child protection policy designed to address bullying
and discrimination in schools, including on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity.
But these policies, while strong on paper, have not been adequately enforced.in the absence of
effectire implemention and monitoring, many LGBT youth continue to experience bullying and
harassment in school.

As mentioned by Polly (2015) Schools can be difficult environments for students,

regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, but they are often especially
unwelcoming for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) young a lack of policies and
affirm and support LGBT young and a failure to implement protections that exist-means that
LGBT students nationwide continue to face bullying, exclusion, and discrimination in school,
putting them at physical and risk and limiting their education

As stated by Heck, Poteat, Goodenow (2016) Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and
queer/questioning (LGBTQ) youth are part of every community, come from all walks of life, and
are present in every racial, ethnic, socioeconomic, and geographical group. While many LGBTQ
youth transition from childhood to adulthood successfully and become healthy and productive
adults, others are negatively impacted as a result of many factors; for LGBTQ youth, social
stigma about their sexual choices or identities can be particularly difficult. Stigma comes in
many forms, such as discrimination, harassment, family disapproval, social rejection, and
violence. This puts LGBTQ youth at increased risk for certain negative health outcomes. For
example, young gay and bisexual males have disproportionately high rates of HIV, syphilis, and
other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs); adolescent lesbian and bisexual females are more
likely to have ever been pregnant than their heterosexual peers; and transgender youth are
more likely to have attempted suicide than their gender peers.

As written by Kerr (2016) and medically reviewed by Legg (2016) Depression affects
LGBT people at higher rates than the heterosexual population, and LGBT youths are more likely
than heterosexual students to report high levels of drug use and feelings of depression.
According to the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Suicide is the third leading
cause of death among people age 10-24 in the United States. Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual
youths in grades 7-12 are twice as likely to attempt suicide that their heterosexual peer. Hostile
school environment affect students performance school and their mental health. LGBT students
who experience victimization, and discrimination typically have worst grades and don’t perform
as well academically.

METHODOLOGY
Ten (10) participants were chosen to be interviewed for this research. The research conducted
their study inside the campus of Del Carmen National High School. The purpose of this is to
have definite sources from each participant.

This study made use of Purposive Sampling Technique in gathering all the necessary data and
information.

Purposive Sampling Technique is a sampling technique in which research relies on his or her
own judgement when choosing member of population in the study. It is a non-probability
sampling method and it occurs when elements selected for the sample are chosen by the
judgement of research. Researchers often believe that they can obtain a representative sample
by using a sound judgement, which will result in using a time and money.

The questionnaires where designed to know the different difficulties that as LGBTQ encounter
especially in school. Also these question aim to answer on how they overcome difficulties and
how they can see themselves as an successful one from being part of LGBTQ. The questions

RESULT AND DISCUSSION

PART OF LGBTQ COMMUNITY

One of the participants said that he is gay in LGBTQ community. Some of them also stated that
they are transgender. One of them also said that he is a Queer, while most of the participants
said that they are Bisexual in LGBTQ .

This only means that not only a gay or lesbian that you can be found in our community,
otherwise they are also Bisexual, transgender, and queer that belong in our community and
experiencing difficulties.

BELONGING AS AN LGBTQ COMMUNITY

One of the participants, stated that he already know that he is a part of LGBTQ when he was 5
years old. One of 10 participants also stated that he is part of LGBTQ when he was in Grade 1.
Some of 10 participants said that they are part of LGBTQ when they are in Grade 6. Most of the
participants stated that they are belong in LGBTQ when they are in Grade 7 and lastly one of
the participants, said that when he was in Grade 10, he is already part of LGBTQ.

This only means, being an LGBTQ has no age, whenever you feel that you are part of it, you
must show it, because that is your personality not them.

DIFFICULTIES OF BEING PART OF LGBTQ COMMUNITY

Most of the participants stated that they are being discriminate and abuse because of their
actions. The others participants said that they are being judged, unloved by the others, and also
not acceptable by their family because of their personality.

To sum up, being an LGBTQ is experiencing a lot of difficulties like discrimination, bullying,
harassment and etc. They treated like others in society. They feel pain, annoyed that lead them
stress or depression and sometimes they committed suicide.

OVERCOMING DIFFICULTIES AS AN LGBTQ COMMUNITY

Among the ten (10) participants most of them stated that whatever difficulties it is just ignored all
the difficulties. Some of the participants stated that don’t be afraid showing who really you are
just believe in yourself. Some of the participants also said that with the help of others especially
friends help them to overcome those difficulties.

Hence, to overcome those difficulties it need to be proud of who really you are, don’t hesitate
remove all negativities and practice your social interaction with others.
FUTURE OF AN LGBTQ COMMUNITY

Lastly, some of the participants claimed that they can proved to others that they have
importance in this world. Most of the participants said that they can help the society in the future
to become a great country. And, some of the participants stated that they are not afraid to fight
their rights besides it will be their motivation.

Finally, if LGBTQ students overcome his/her difficulties, it can help them to motivate themselves
to be whatever they want to be in the future.
CONCLUSION
Based on the result of this study the following conclusion are the formulated answers
from the researcher:

1. In this century, homosexual person had been evolved. In last century the people
know only gay and lesbian as a Homosexual person, but due to social aspects. In
our era, homosexual defines as LGBTQ which mean Lesbian Gay Bisexual
Transgender and Queer.

2. As stated on the first conclusion, due to social interaction of some homosexual

students to the other students who hide their personality got some confidence to
show their true colors. That’s why LGBTQ has no age, whenever you feel that you
have different kind of personality, you must show it, because that your true colors.

3. Every homosexual facing different kind of difficulties because of their action and
personality such as discrimination, bullying, harassment and etc. It may lead to
depression, that some commit suicide because they lose self confidence and they
are afraid to show their true color that’s why being LGBTQ is not easy because their
experience unequal treatment.

4. To overcome difficulties especially those who are part of LGBTQ you must need
enough confidence, just ignore all the negativities, believe in yourself and motivate
yourself with the help of the others likes friend.

5. LGBTQ has also a future in their life and society. Despite the difficulties they
encounter. They can be whatever they want to be, because they are also human
who wants a better life and future.

6. We are all human. We are all living in the same world. We are the same in human
rights and mission. We are all experiencing difficulties but most often homosexual
students experience it, that’s why we need to treat others like how we treat God.
RECOMMENDATION
Based on the result of findings, the following recommendation are to be considered :

1. Help homosexual Students by protecting them against to those students who hurt them

2. Respect each other, also homosexual students, because respecting other people is the way
on how do you respect yourself.

3. Help them by simply understand and respect them as a people like us, breathing and
living in this world, be open- minded.

4. Help them to motivate themselves to cope up with their difficulties facing in their life.

5. We need to treat LGBTQ like how we treat others because we all have human rights.
They are different in society but similar in human rights and mission.

6. Homosexual students can help our society to be great especially our school. That’s why
stop doing foolish things instead help them, give them equal treatment and don’t
discriminate them.
