GameScape
Creating new realities in physical
design, through a digital lens
In S/S 21, the digital space will emerge as a place for
escapism and self-expression, as digital becomes
increasingly influential in the physical realm.

These altered states will drive demand for artificial colours,

exaggerated forms, distorted or consciously fake prints and
patterns, and hi-tech fabrics, all pulled together with a level
of sophistication. We will also see old ideas and new
classics reimagined for the digital age, as design widens its
focus to borrow from different eras and industries.

The feeling of this fun, experimental direction is best

summed up by American artist Laurie Anderson. In
speaking about her latest VR installation, she said: "It’s a
great time to be creating new realities."

Action Points
In GameScape, the line between real and digital is blurred,
with garden and outdoor products that feature tech-inspired
colours and hyper-digital finishes. Retro references are
reinterpreted through a digital lens, and products offer a
whimsical sense of escapism that will appeal to Insta-savvy
Millennials.

1. Keep the consumer guessing: for materials and

finishes, experiment with fake, dried, paper and other
sustainable plant alternatives to make the consumer
second guess whether a product is real or fake.

2. Update industrial themes: industrial styles will remain

important, but they should be updated with digital
finishes, including iridescent hues, bold metallics and
mesh fabrics or details.

3. Encourage self-expression: use stacked and sculptural

designs to encourage consumers to mix and match
products, and be experimental with bold colours and
shapes.

4. Look to the past and future: fuse Art Deco design

references with futuristic updates to create a playful
aesthetic. This will be ideal for gifting items such as pots
and planters, pool products, and other small outdoor
accessories.
