The National anthem of Belize was written in 1963 by Samuel Alfred Haynes, and Selwyn Walford Young. The
National was adopted from the Great Britain in 1981. The red, white, and blue flag of Belize is a symbol of unity.
The Belize flag is royal blue with one horizontal red stripe at the top, one at the bottom, and a white circle with
the Coat of Arms in the center. The National Motto of Belize is “Sub Umbra Floreo,” which means “Under The
Shade We Flourish.”

The Black Orchid grows on the trees in the damp areas of Belize. It flowers nearly all year round. It has greenish-
yellowish petals and sepals with purple patches near the base. One of the petals is deep purple brown, almost
black, with well-defined purple veins.

The Mahogany Tree grows to a height over a hundred feet from great support of the roots. It is an important part
of our history and a part of Belize’s Coat of Arm. The tree has small, whitish flowers and dark fruits which are
pear shaped. The Mahogany Tree matures in 60 to 80 years.

The Tapir is the largest animal in the land of the tropics. It is known in Belize as the Mountain Cow. The Tapir is
a stoutly built animal with short legs and weigh up to 600 pounds. It is dusty brown in color, with some white
patches. The Tapir is a vegetarian. It spends much time in the water and is a strong swimmer.

The keel-billed Toucan is recognized for its great and brightly colored canoe bill. It is about 20 inches in length.
Toucans are found in large areas that have large trees. They like fruits, and cut them with the jagged edges of their
bill. They nest in holes in trees and lay from two to four eggs.
