Dear Residency Program Director,

As I approach graduation from The University of Arizona College of Nursing in May 2020,
I would like to express my interest in the openings in your new graduate nurse residency
program. My clinical experience and academic foundation have prepared me to be a nurse that
thinks critically and comprehensively, given me the skills to stand strong even when
overwhelmed, and appreciate the connections I form with those I interact with in the hospital.
My time as a nursing student has proven that great nurses foster an environment of competent
and compassionate care, which I believe I have found at your facility.
While at the U of A, I saw each clinical experience not just as time to practice skills, but
as a chance to take that extra step to connect and be there for my patients. The first patient I
cared for during my Med-Surg rotation was a colorectal cancer survivor whose stoma had
become infected. The day I cared for her was when they first discovered urine in her colostomy
bag. Although her physicians had come and talked to her, she was anxious because she did not
understand why there needed to be further testing. So, I stood in her room and used my arms
to draw the gastrointestinal and urinary tracts in air. With these quick models and vocabulary
that I knew she would use herself, I explained our concerns. She was so happy just to finally
understand what was going on, to have the ability to move forward with her care informed. It is
moments like that one that make me value each patient encounter, even the tough and tragic,
because they are my opportunities to personally help someone and to provide exceptional care.
Those who put their faith in us to help them, deserve to feel understood and aided by a
knowledgeable healthcare team and I look forward to being part of your team.
I am eager to work in a community that has professional and empathetic values that
drive their work like your city, that would support my growth and help me to provide quality
care. The opportunity to be a part of your residency program will allow me to hone my
dedication and skills to become a great nurse. I look forward to contributing my personal and
professional strengths and talents with your team. I would greatly appreciate the opportunity
to speak more about how my skills can benefit your Residency Program. I can be reached at

Sincerely,

Becky Patty
