Summarizing with “Somebody…Wanted…But…So…Then…”


Standard (PA Common Core):
 CC.1.2.2.B Ask and answer questions such as who, what, where, when, why, and how to
demonstrate understanding of key details in a text.

I. Performance Objectives (Learning Outcome):


 The student will summarize a story by combining the summarizing strategy answers.

II. Instructional Materials:


 Teacher Materials:
- book: Enemy Pie
- phone for recording videos
- tripod to help record videos
- video editor
- youtube account
- nearpod account
- google classroom account
- paper and markers for strategy chart

 Student Materials:
- laptop/computer/tablet device
- google classroom
- paper/writing utensil to help take notes

i. summary: a brief statement or account of the main points of something
ii. summarize: give a brief statement of the main points of something

C. Big Idea
i. Students will summarize a story by using the summarizing strategy that is
taught to them. The summarizing strategy helps them pick out the main
points of the story to make summarizing the story easier.

IV. Implementation:
A. Introduction:
1. Student will log on to their google classroom and click on the
“Summarizing Strategy”
2. Student will enter their name when asked and begin the
presentation
B. Development:
1. The first slide is an introduction slide so students know what they
will be doing.
2. The second slide is the book “Enemy Pie” read aloud
3. The third slide is an overview of the strategy that the students will
be learning through the course of the presentation.
4. The fourth slide is discussion the first question of Somebody (Who
is the main character?)
1. the character in the book didn’t have a name that was stated in the
text
5. The fifth slide is discussion the next question Wanted… (What is
the main thing s/he wants?
1. The character wants to get rid of his enemy Jeremy Ross
2. Students will answer this question within the powerpoint slide
6. The sixth slide is a discussion of the answer and using the book so
students can see where the answer came from incase they didn’t get the
right answer (all answers are sent to the teacher along with names so the
teacher can monitor the students’ work)
7. The seventh slide is going over the But… (Thinking about the
obstacles or problems that the character encounters)
1. students will answer this question on the next slide
8. Eighth slide is discussion the answer to the previous asked
question
1. the character must hang out with his enemy and be nice to him for
the day
9. Nineth slide is So… (What is the solution to the problem or how
does the character reach his/her goal?) this one was tricky so I worked
through this answer in the video
10. Tenth slide is So discussion and answer
1. The character hangs out with the enemy and ends up enjoying
himself
11. Eleventh slide is Then… (How do the story end?) students answer
this question on the next slide
12. Twelfth slide is Then… discussion of the answer
1. The main character gets rid of his enemy by becoming friends with
him
13. The last slide is how the students take those 5 answers and create
their summary.
C. Closure
1. Once students complete the first presentation, they will complete
the summarizing practice presentation. This presentation includes another
read aloud and student will answer all 5 questions themselves then give
their final summary at the end.
2. The answers/responses will be sent to the teacher so the teacher
can see how each student is doing and can allow the teacher information
on which student may need more help on this area of comprehension.
D. Accommodations:
1. The responses can be recorded using a microphone on the device
if the student lacks the ability to type responses.
2. The level of the books are lower so it meets the needs of all
students since this is a new strategy that they are learning.
3. Once the teacher collects the response the students that struggled
can receive extra practice or help on an individual need basis.
E. Assessment/Evaluation Plan
- Formative
1. Students responses from the presentation answers will be
automatically sent to the teacher and reviewed. The teacher
can then send more practice to students that struggle and can
continue teaching new strategies to the students that were able
to succeed using the strategy.
