2.6 Treatment Tank

2.6.a Aeration Chamber

The area requires by this chamber is as follow: -

Volume required = 18 to 24 Hrs of D.W.F.
Let retention time = 18 Hrs
Thus, volume require = (18 x 157.50)  24 m³
= 118.13 m³
Area of aeration tank = 2.40 m (W) x 7.20 m (L) x 2 units
Liquid depth = 3.50 m
Volume provided = (2.40 x 7.20 x 3.50) m³ x 2 units
= 120.96 m³ > (req. 118.13 m³)

2.6.b Calculation Of Denitrification Basin Residence Time

To calculate the denitrification basin residence time, Q from the equation,
U = So - S Equation (a)
Qx
where U = denitrification rate, Ib No3 - N/Ib.
MLVSS.d
So = Substrate concentration in influent, Mg/L
S = Substrate concentration in effluent, Mg/L
Q = Hydraulic detention time for denitrification, d
x = Concentration of micro organism in reactor,
mass Vss/unit volume, or mg/l
Thus, from equation (a),
Q = So - S Equation (b)
Ux
Adopt, U at 20oC = 0.03 to 0.11 (from MetCalf Eddy,
Wastewater Engineering Book, page 713)
Lets adopt U at 200C = 0.09 day-1

Let Inffluent Nitrate = 30 Mg/L

and Effluent Nitrate = 3 Mg/L
Hence, equation (b),
Q = 30 – 3 day
0.09 x 3200

= 27 day
288
= 0.94 day
= 2.25 hrs
Knowing hydraulic detention time at reactor is 18.43 Hrs.
Thus, fraction of the total retention volume required for the denitrification basin is
= 2.25 x 100 %
18.43
= 12.21 %
Knowing vol. of Aeration tank = 120.96 m3
and vol. of Anoxic Zone = 120.96 x 0.12 m3
= 14.77 m3
Volume of Anoxic Zone Provided = 1.10 m (W) x 5.10 m (L) x 3.60 m (D) x 1 unit
= 20.20 m3 (14.77 m3 req)
Proposed Anoxic Tank size = 1.10 m (W) x 5.10 m (L) x 3.60 m (D)

2.7 Sedimentation Chamber

The area required by this chamber is as follow: -

Volume required = 2.0 Hrs of peak flow

= (2 x 671.17)  24 m³
= 55.93 m³

Area required = 30 m³/m².day of peak flow

= (671.17  30) m²
= 22.37 m²

Dimension of Sedimentation tank is at follow: -

Hopper area = 5.10 m x 5.10 m
Hopper base area = 1.20 m x 1.20 m
Total hopper depth = 4.42 m
Actual hopper depth = 3.38 m
Side liquid depth = 1.02 m
Total liquid depth = 4.40 m
Slope gradient = 60°
No of hopper = 1
Volume of Sedimentation tank = Side liquid volume + actual pyramid
volume of hopper
Side liquid volume = (5.10 x 5.10 x 1.02) m³
= 26.53 m³
Actual pyramid volume of hopper = [(5.10 x 5.10 x 4.42)  3] –
[(1.20 x 1.20 x 1.04)  3] m³

= 37.79 m³
Volume provided = (26.53 + 37.79)  m³
= 64.32 m³ > (Req.: 55.93 m³)
Area provided = (5.10 x 5.10 ) m²
= 26.01 m² > (Req.: 22.37 m²)
Thus, Sedimentation Chamber Area = 5.10 m x 5.10 m

2.8 Sludge Holding Tank

VT x MLSS
Quantity of WAS per day = SLUDGE
- Qavg x SS eff

Cu

where: -
VT = volume of reactor (m3)
MLSS = mixed liquid suspended solid (kg/m3)
SLUDGE = sludge age (days)
Qavg = average flow (m3/day)
SSeff = effluent suspended solid (kg/m3)
Cu = underflow concentration (kg/m3)
120.96 x 3.50
Thus, quantity of WAS per day = - 157.5 x 0.02
30
_

10
= 11.00 m3/day
10
= 1.10 m3/day
Vol. of sludge/day = 1.10 m³
= 11.33 kg/day
th
According to Metcalf-Eddy, 4 Ed. Page 1,536, the main objective of aerobic
sludge holding tank is to reduce the mass solid disposal and VSS reduction range
from 35% to 55%.

Hence, VSS adopted = 35%

35% VSS to be digested = 11.33 x 0.35 kg

= 3.97 kg/day

WAS after VSS reduction = (11.33 – 3.97) kg/day

= 7.36 kg
= 0.72 m³/day

Design for 30 days capacity volume = (0.72 x 30) m³

= 21.45 m³

Hence, volume provided = 1.40 m (W) x 5.10 m (L) x 3.85 m (D)

= 27.49 m³ > (Req. : 21.45 m³)

Thus, sludge holding chamber

area = 1.40 m (W) x 5.10 m (L)

Page 8

Design Calculation w/o Sludge Dewatering Facilities

2.9 Chlorination Chamber

Hydraulic Retention Time = 15 minutes

Design Peak Flow, Qpeak = 769.87 m3/day
Volume Required = (769.87 x 15) ÷ 1440 m3
= 8.02 m3
Proposed Volume of Chlorination
Chamber = 0.50 m (W) x 2.05 m (L) x 2.00 m (D)
x 4 passes
= 8.20 m3 > 8.02 m3 (req.)
Thus, proposed chlorination
chamber = 0.50 m (W) x 2.05 m (L) x 2.00 m (D)
x 4 passes
