1. DESIGN CRITERIA

1.1 STRUCTURAL DESIGN MODEL

The Twelve-Column Portal Falsework support system for the R-1 project is analyzed

and designed using three-dimensional frame analysis. Tha leg bases are specified

to be pinned. The analysis of the whole structure is done using STAAD PRO V8i

software by Research Engineers Inc.

1.2 CODES AND STANDARDS

The Twelve-Column Portal Platform support system was designed in accordance

with the requirements contained in the following Codes and Standards.

a. National Structural Code of the Philippines, 2015 Volume 1 (7th Edition)

b. AISC Manual of Steel Construction, Allowable Stress Design, 9th Edition
c. Caltrans Falsework Design Manual (Rev. 38)
d. DPWH Department Order No. 50 Series of 2006

1.3 DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS

a. Unit of Measurement

S.I. (System International) was applied for all units of measurement and design
calculations. Related engineering documents and product credentials were
written in English. Necessary conversions were done as required.
Structural Calculations
Proposed Drilling Platform

b. Materials

Structural materials used for the Twelve-Column Portal Platform support system
shall be of qualities specified in the applicable standards as follows:

1. All Structural Steel Members

ASTM A36 Structural Steel : 248 Mpa Yield Strength

From Table AISC ASD Manual 9th Edition:

1.1 W6x12

1.2 HP10x42

1.3 HSSP 14x0.5

Outside Dia. = 14 in. = 350 mm
Thickness = 0.47 in. = 12 mm
2 2
Ax = 19.8 in = 12774 mm
I = 453 in.4 = 188552835.8 mm4
Structural Calculations

c. Design Procedure

The design of steel members was done using the provisions and requirements
of the allowable strength method as required by AISC Allowable Strength Design
(AISC ASD 9th Edition).
d. Maximum Allowable Deflection
Maximum DL + LL Deflection : Span / 240

1.4 LOAD CASES

a. Dead Load (DL)

The following weights were considered in calculating the dead loads of the
structure:
Structural Steel = 77 kN/m3
Post and Railings = 0.1 kN/m

b. Live Load (LL)

The following live loads were considered for the whole structure:
2
Walkway Area = 4.8 kN/m
Over total area supported = 1 kN/m2
Drilling Rig & Hammer = 200 kN

LIVE LOADS

c. Horizontal Load (2%DL and WL)

As per DPWH D.O. No. 50 Series 2006 Section 414.3.1.2.2, the horizontal load
is the sum of any actual loads due to equipment, construction sequence or
other causes, plus an allowance for wind. In no case however, may the
horizontal design load be less than two percent of the total supported
dead load at the location under consideration.
For the wind load consideration, calculation of the design wind load was based
on the wind pressure value specified in Table 1 for Heavy Duty Steel shoring.

1.5 LOAD COMBINATIONS

As per National Structural Code of the Philippines, 2015, Volume 1 (7th Edition)
the structure and all portions thereof shall resist the most critical effects
resulting from the following load combinations:

a. DL + LL
b. DL + 2%DLX
c. DL + 2%DLZ
d. DL + WLX
e.. DL + WLZ

2. LOAD ANALYSIS
2.1 DEAD LOAD

Post and Railings = 0.1 kN/m
Total Wt. of Dead load = 1.11 kN/m

Note : Derived dead loads are applied to spreader beams spaced at 700mm o.c.

2.2 LIVE LOAD

STAAD Load
Walkway Area = 3.36 kN/m = 4.8*0.7
Over total area supported = 0.7 kN/m = 1*0.7
Drilling Rig & Hammer = 23.333 kN/m = (200/6)*0.7

I= = 0.32 use 0.3
L + 38
Total Wt. of Live load plus impact = 35.61 kN/m

Note : Derived dead loads are applied to spreader beams spaced at 700mm o.c.

2.3 WIND LOAD (DPWH D.O. No. 50 Series 2006)

Wind Pressure Value (0-9m) = 960 Pa (Adjacent to Traffic)
Wind Pressure Value (9-15m) = 1200 Pa (Adjacent to Traffic)
