ENGY4000 - Week 2 Tutorial

Task 1 – Coal Fired Power Station

Setup a typical new plant with no CCS. The plant should have 1GW gross output.

Base parameters & results:

Breakeven cost $51.17

How does the net output, capital, operating and breakeven costs; and CO2 emissions change with:

 Ambient temperature and humidity – change to 30deg

o Higher capital & operating cost due to cooling requirements to reuse water

 Ambient temperature and humidity – change pressure to 0.102MPa

o Negligible change, slight increase in cost and decrease in net output
 Coal type – WPC Utah, Wyoming powder river basin and north Dakota lignite

 Capacity factor
 Steam cycle type – Sub, super and ultra supercritical
 Boiler firing type
 Cooling type,
 Discount rate

What happens to the base values when you install CCS using:

 Membranes
 Pressure Swing Adsorption

Does this new configuration represent a new plant or a retrofit of the old plant? If you want to
retrofit the old plant – consider how you might do this to ensure the cost of the existing equipment
(which has already been paid for) is not included in your overall costs.

Task 2 – Gas Fired Power Station

Setup a typical new plant with no CCS. The plant should have 3 GE 7FB turbines.

How does the net output, capital, operating and breakeven costs; and CO2 emissions change with:
 Ambient temperature and humidity
 Fuel composition – 100% methane, High CO2 - 93.1% CH4, 5%CO2, rest N2 and High C2/C3 –
92.5% CH4, 3.5% C2, 2% C3, rest CO2.
 Capacity factor
 Turbine type
 HRSG outlet temperature – 130, 140, 90
 Cooling type – wet cooled, air cooled
 Discount rate

What happens to the base values when you install CCS using:

 Ammonia
