At 2:11 PM of December 15, 2019, a strong magnitude of 6.9 earthquake shook the
province of Davao del Sur and vicinity. The epicenter of the earthquake was located at
Matanao, Davao del Sur.
Several buildings and roads were damaged as a result. The National Disaster Risk
Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said over a hundred people were injured.
Residents felt unsafe and were scared of any aftershocks. Some people feared that it was
a sign of a bigger disaster. After all, earthquakes are thought to be one of the fearful
calamities.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) stated that the
cause of the earthquake in Davao Region was the presence of several active faults nearby.
However, the agency announced that the recent earthquake would not trigger a tsunami
nor did it indicate any volcanic activity.
But what is an earthquake? It is a sudden and violent shaking of the ground as a result
of movements within the earth's crust or volcanic action. The point at the Earth's surface
directly above the focus is called the epicenter. At the epicenter, the strongest shaking
occurs during an earthquake.
People are reminded to be cautious. The best course of action is preparedness. In
case of another strongly felt earthquake, it is recommended that people protect
themselves by doing the “drop, cover and hold.”
