REFLECTION ESSAY
“PASSIONS DEVELOP ABOUT WHAT WE'RE GOOD AT, BUT SOME THINGS TAKE LONGER FOR US TO GET GOOD AT.”

THIS IS PROBABLY MY MOST FAVORITE COURSE IN COURSERA. EVERYTHING ABOUT IT IS ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL AND EACH TOPIC IS ON
POINT. I NEVER KNEW I WOULD ENJOY SOMETHING ABOUT PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT, MUCH MORE ABOUT DIGGING INTO MY INNER SELF
AND READING MY THOUGHTS. THE BEAUTY OF MINDSHIFT IS SOMETHING THAT EVERY PERSON WHO STRUGGLES EMOTIONALLY AND
PSYCHOLOGICALLY MUST BE EXPERIENCED. DR. BARBARA OAKLEY AND DR. TERRENCE SEJNOWSKI DID AN EXCELLENT JOB ON
CONNECTING TO US, COURSE TAKERS, VIRTUALLY AND I WISH THE COURSE COVERED MORE TOPICS BECAUSE I AM THIRSTY FOR THIS
KIND OF KNOWLEDGE. I COMMEND THEIR DEDICATION TO PITCH ONLINE LEARNING AS AN EFFECTIVE METHOD FOR THIS GENERATION.
ALSO, NELSON DELLIS’ BONUS VIDEOS IN ENHANCING MEMORY SKILL ARE OUTSTANDING. I DISCOVERED HIM THROUGH HIS YOUTUBE
CHANNEL AND TO MY SURPRISE, HIS TECHNIQUES ON LEARNING MORSE CODE HELPED ME A LOT. I CAN NOW DECODE MORSE MESSAGES
AND HIM BEING ON MINDSHIFT MADE THE COURSE EVEN MORE EXCITING.

I HAVE BEEN A SCHOLAR SINCE HIGHSCHOOL AND I NOTICED THAT PEOPLE ARE MORE LIKELY WANT TO PAY ATTENTION TO SMART ONES. I
KNOW THAT’S A LITTLE BIT UNCOMFORTABLE BUT WHAT MOST PEOPLE OVERLOOKED ARE THOSE WHO ARE LEFT BEHIND. I KNEW SOME
STUDENTS WHO FIND MATH REALLY HARD, COMMUNICATION UNNERVING, AND DANCE STEPS COMPLICATED. WE SHOULD NOT BLAME
THEM FOR THEIR SHORTCOMING; WE MUST UNDERSTAND THEM. MINDSHIFT THOUGHT ME THAT SLOW LEARNERS ARE CAPABLE OF
THINGS EVEN GENIUSES CANNOT KEEP TRACK. THEY HAVE KEENER EYES TO CATCH SMALL DETAILS AND THEY CAN PRODUCE QUALITY
OUTPUTS. IT IS NOT ALWAYS ABOUT BEING THE MOST INTELLIGENT ONE IN THE ROOM, BUT BEING THE MOST PERSISTENT AND FLEXIBLE
ONE. AND IF YOU WANT TO LEARN SOMETHING BY YOURSELF, IT IS BETTER TO “ACTIVELY” PRACTICE YOURSELF; TO GET YOURSELF
INVOLVE IN THE PROGRESS.

FURTHERMORE, MINDSHIFT PROVED TO ME THAT TIME MANAGEMENT IS REALLY AN ESSENTIAL SKILL TO POSSESS. AS A STUDENT AND
MEMBER OF AN ORGANIZATION, I ONCE OVERWORKED MYSELF WHICH LED MY HEALTH TO BE COMPROMISED – MY LUNGS WEAKENED AND
MY BLOOD PRESSURE DECREASED. FOR THIS REASON, I REALIZED THAT I SHOULD SERIOUSLY VALUE THINGS AND WORK WITH IT AT MY
COMFORT. BY LEARNING THE POMODORO TECHNIQUE, I CAN NOW FOCUS ON WHAT I AM TRYING TO MASTER. REMOVING ALL
DISTRACTIONS FOR AT LEAST 25 MINUTES AND REWARDING MYSELF DURING BREAKS SUCH AS DOING MEDITATIONS AND LIGHT
EXERCISES WILL EASE TENSION AND PREVENT PROCRASTINATION.

ALSO, DR. OAKLEY MADE A HUGE POINT ABOUT CHOOSING A CAREER. WHETHER IT IS IN RELATION TO YOUR HOBBIES OR PERSONAL
INSPIRATION, CAREER MUST NOT PUT YOU INTO A PASSION TRAP. RATHER, IT SHOULD GUIDE YOU TO BROADEN YOUR PASSION AND
CULTIVATE IT AS YOU GAIN EXPERIENCES. I ALSO KNOW SOMEONE WHO REALLY JUST WANT TO DO ONE THING AND SAID THAT IT WILL GET
HIM/HER TO HIS/HER DREAM. I SOMEHOW AGREE WITH HIM/HER BUT AFTER TAKING THIS COURSE, I FOUND OUT THAT IT IS NOT HEALTHY
AT ALL. IN LINE WITH FLEXIBILITY, WE SHOULD AT LEAST BE OKAY AT SEVERAL OR A LOT OF THINGS THAN BEING KNOWN FOR ONLY ONE
THING. WHAT IF YOUR CLIENT NEEDS SOMETHING FROM YOU AND YOU CAN ONLY DO A SPECIFIC SKILL? A JACK OF ALL TRADES IS STILL
BETTER THAN THE KING OF ONE COLOR.

LASTLY, ONE OF THE TAKEAWAYS I GAINED IN MINDSHIFT IS, “LEARNING IS LIFELONG.” SCIENTIFICALLY, OUR BRAIN MUST BE FED WITH
NEW KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS FOR IT TO STAY HEALTHY. AND BY LEARNING ANYTHING OUT OF OUR COMFORT ZONES WILL NOT ONLY
GEAR US UP IN THE LONG RUN, BUT ALSO MAKES OUR MIND SMARTER EVEN IN OUR 70S. IT IS NEVER TOO LATE TO EXPLORE THE WORLD
AND TRY DIFFERENT LEARNING STYLE APPROACHES. READING A BOOK AT LEAST 20 MINUTES A DAY AND HAVING A MENTOR ON YOUR
VENTURE WILL HAVE A GREAT IMPACT ON YOUR FUTURE AND SUCCESSFUL SELF. AS CHILDISH AS IT SOUNDS, I CAN SAY THAT LEARNING
IS FUN ESPECIALLY IF YOU PUT YOUR MIND AND HEART ON IT.
