ACTIVITY
Objective
Proving that plants need food.

Tools and Materials

2 pots/polybags, some completely washed sand, 2 plastic trays, some NPK fertilizer, some mung bean seeds, some water, and some aquadest.

Steps of Activity
1. Prepare 2 pots/polybags that have been punched on the bottom.
2. Fill both pots/polybags with clean sands and plant 2 one-day old sprouts on them.
3. Fill one plastic tray with fertilizer liquid and the other one with aquadest so that each tray contains:
Tray I: a half tray of fertilizer solution with ratio 1 gram/iter.
Tray Il: a half tray of aquadest.
4. Water pot 1 with fertilizer solution then put it on tray I.
5. Water pot 2 with aquadest then put it on tray II.
6. Measure the increase of plant's height every 4 days for 2 weeks.
7. Note your observation in the following table on your activity book.
Plant’s Height (cm)
Tray Day Pictures Average Leaf Color / Plant Appearance
Plant 1 Plant 2

On the 4th day, sprouts have grown from each

bean, the color is light yellow, the leaves begin to
4 3,8 3 3,4
appear but their size is very small, and has a pale
white stem

On the 8th day, the fertilized plant has the same

I 8 13 13 13 height, the color of the leaves is green to brass,

and has the same height.

On the 12th day, it has an open leaf shape and is

12 18,5 18 18,25
green, but still looks a little yellow.
On the 16th day, the leaves are thicker and fresh
16 25 23,8 24,4 green. The higher and the two plants are almost
the same height.

On the 4th day, the leaves begin to appear but

4 9,7 8 8,85 their size is still small, the leaves are light
yellowish greenish, and have fresh white stems.

II

On the 8th day, plants that were given distilled

water had faster growth compared to plants that
8 16 14 15
were given fertilizer, but the color of the leaves
was still pale or still green to brass.
On the 12th day, the leaves are thicker and fresh
12 24,5 19,8 22,15 green. The higher but the two plants that are in
pots with distilled water have different height.

On the 16th day, the leaf's appearance was still

16 26,8 22,7 24,75 the same on the 12th day, but the stems were
getting higher

8. Make conclusions from the activity you have done!

Conclusion:
Plants that were given distilled water had faster growth compared to plants that were given NPK fertilizer. Green bean leaves in a pot with
distilled water more quickly have leaves that are fresh green.
So it can be concluded that giving distilled water to plants has a faster growth process compared to the fertilizer. Plants need nutrients.
Providing food in plants can affect the growth process of green beans. However, the nutrients needed for each plant are different.
