IV. PROCEDURES

Translate the following verbal to mathematical expressions.

1. x+5 - Five added to a number.
A. Reviewing previous
2. 2x = x + 5 - Doubling a number gives the same value as adding five to the number.
lesson or presenting the
new lesson 3. 2x – 1 - Twice a number decreased by 1.
4. 1 = 2x – 1 - 1 is obtained when twice a number is decreased by 1.
5. 7+x - Seven increased by a number.
Try to answer! Age Problem:
B. Establishing a purpose for
the lesson Aron is 3 times older than Mimi. In 15 years, the sum of their ages is 38 years. Find
their present ages.
In representation:
In 15 years, the sum of their ages is 38 years.
C. Presenting AGE NOW IN 15 YEARS
examples/instances of the
new lesson Mimi b b + 15
Aron 3b 3b + 15
(b + 15) + (3b + 15) = 38
D. Discussing new concepts Using Algebra Tiles…
and practicing new skills Representing the linear equations in one variable.

#1

In solving linear equation with one variable, first we need to isolate the variable in
E. Discussing new concepts
the other side and the constant in the other side. Next simplify the equation by
and practicing new skills
#2 performing operations. Lastly, substitute the computed value to check if the answer is
correct.
Using Algebra Dominoes…
F. Developing mastery
Each group will be given 10 pieces of domino tiles and each tile has an equation
(leads to Formative
Assessment 3) and a value of the variable, they will connect each domino tile from the start to the
end. They are free to make any patterns out of the tiles.
Going back to the Age Problem earlier…
In 15 years, the sum of their ages is 38 years.
AGE NOW IN 15 YEARS
Mimi b b + 15
Aron 3b 3b + 15
G. Finding practical (b + 15) + (3b + 15) = 38
applications of concepts 4b + 30 = 38
and skills in daily living 4b + 30 + (-30) = 38 + (-30) (SPE)
4b = 8
4b 8
= (DPE)
4 4
b=2
Therefore, Mimi’s present age is 2 while Aron’s present age is 6.
Questions/Points to Ponder:
H. Making generalizations
and abstractions about
1. What are the steps in solving linear equation in one variable?
the lesson 2. Can we apply this knowledge in or daily life?
3. Cite some examples of situation where we can use the knowledge about the topic.

J. Evaluating learning
