Exercise 1

Types of Scales

In each statement, identify the variables that require the data and describe the
type of scale for the required data.

Example: A typical college student possesses characteristics


such as performance level, attitude towards the teacher and ambition.
The variables are: performance level, attitude towards teacher, and
ambition. Performance level dictates degree, thus, it is classified under
nominal data. Attitude towards the teacher may come up with answers
such as: positive or negative, favorable or unfavorable, it is also
classified as nominal. Ambition also belongs to the same type.

1. A short survey consists of these pieces of information:


a. Religion - uses the nominal scale for it state what group would they belong to
in terms of beliefs.
b. Number of religious services attended for months - are of interval because it
provides number of times, they've attended their services.
c. Amount of money contributed per service - it is ratio scale have an absolute
zero scale; it indicates the quantity of contributions per service.

2. A study on consumer-buying habits asks every twentieth person entering the SM


Supermarket “how many times per week she/he goes grocery shopping?”
a. Consumer-buying habits is nominal scale because it specifies the buying
habits of a consumer.
b. Twentieth person is ordinal because it specifies the rank order of every
person that enters SM Supermarket.
c. Number of times per week of grocery shopping is interval because it gives
the range times the person goes to shopping in a week.
3. A researcher studying the attitude of parents of preschool children interviews a
random sample of 50 mothers, each having one pre-school child. She asks each
mother, the number of times she accompanied her child everyday.
a. Attitude of parents is nominal because attitude may come up as positive or
negative.
b. Number of times of accompaniment every day is interval because it specifies
the equal interval per day.

4. A study is designed to show the average monthly income per household and
number of children.
a. Average monthly income is ratio because it specifies the income of the
household per month.
b. Number of children is also ratio scale because in every household differs in
number of children.

5. The number of cases of each type of operation performed at a general hospital.


a. Type of operation is nominal because it indicates the type of operation to be
performed.
b. Number of cases performed is interval because provides the number of cases
according to the type of operations.

6. Examination scores during the Mid-term and final examinations.


a. Scores during Midterm and Final Exam is interval because the range of the scores
from the examination.

7. The difference between the indoor and outdoor temperature.


a. Difference between indoor and outdoor temperature is interval because the
temperature may change or vary indoor and outdoor.

8. Drinking habits of male contractors reveal the number of beers they drink every
week.
a. Drinking habits of male contractors is nominal scale because it identifies habits of
the male contractors.
b. Number of beers per week is interval because it provides the number or range of
beers the contractors drink per week.
9. A Plebiscite asks the voters whether they go for or against the Charter change.
a. Go for or against Charter change is nominal because it identifies if the voters
agree or disagree with the Charter change
10. A researcher asked the first three favorite subjects of the students in College.
a. Favorite subjects are nominal because it states the favorite subjects of the students
in college.
b. First three subjects are ordinal scale because it reflects a rank to the college
student’s favored subjects.
