It is my pleasure to introduce Mr. SUSHOVAN DHARA, a dual degree (M.Sc. + M.

Tech) final year

graduate of Physics and Materials Science at Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, who is applying for
graduate studies at Ohio State University. Sushovan is pursuing a highly interdisciplinary course
designed specifically to equip the students with strong understanding of physics and material
science in the dynamic field of nanoscience and nanotechnology. He was one of the eight candidates
selected for the course nationwide through an all-India examination attempted by more than
fifteen thousand candidates.

I have known Sushovan for more than one year now. Through the courses that I have taught him, I
have formed an excellent opinion about him. I was his instructor for the courses ‘Semiconductor
Device Manufacturing and Processing’ and ‘Science and Technology of Thin Films’ wherein he
demonstrated his desire for clear understanding of basic principles of the topics covered in class as
was evident from his excellent grades as well as from his interaction outside of class. Through the
courses, I have observed his penchant for experimentation during a lab interaction where he
showed excellent understanding of the various nanofabrication methods covered in the courses.
Sushovan has consistently done well in the courses taught by me- a fact strongly reflected in his
course grades. I feel Sushovan has been able to form excellent understanding of the fabrication
methods and the physics behind them.

Being in an interdisciplinary environment, he has the ability to look for solutions across various
approaches, a must-have for a competitive and dynamic setting offered by the Columbia University.
Having completed 42 core masters courses in six semesters he has managed to accumulate a wide
knowledge span, but with a slight compromise on his grades owing to the stringent workload. But
in terms of conceptual understanding he has always proved his excellence. He has performed really
good in the coursework co-relating to his motivation of research securing the top grades ‘AA’ and
‘AB’ and is the topper in his class.

He has a keen inclination towards ‘Nanoelectronics’, ‘2D materials’ and other advanced topics like
flexible electronics, sensing and nuromorphic devices in which he wishes to pursue his PhD. He has a
strong passion to develop technologies which can directly impact the society. He possesses a diverse set
of commendable qualities and will be an excellent addition to any research organization. He is an
independent thinker but at the same time collaborates with fellow students very well. This makes him
unique for a graduate program where both qualities are essential for success. He has a very good
command on both written and spoken English. Given his strong academic and research background,
research experience, publications, natural ability and desire for excellence, I believe Sushovan is an
excellent candidate for the graduate program. I strongly recommend Sushovan for graduate studies in
Ohio State University with full financial support. I believe the state-of-the-art facilities and research
environment at Ohio StateUniversity will prepare him for a highly fruitful and successful career in
advanced science and technologies.

I wish him all the best in his future academic endeavors.

Sincerely,

R. O. Dusane
