Load Assumption (Yee Khai Chee)

Based on the information given, I have separated the floor layout into five different areas,
namely apron, waiting area, guard house, room and bathroom. For the case of planter, I assume that the
planter does not have any concrete casted over it, since planter area is for planting purposes. The
following calculation is my own engineering judgement.

Table 1 shows the loading areas that I have considered. The live load of apron, room and
bathroom are categorized as domestic and residential activities. The live load of waiting area is
categorized as areas where people may congregate. The live load of guard house is categorized as offices
for general use. All values were extracted from Structural Scheme Design Guide and BS 6399-1: 1996.

Waiting Area Floor finish (screed) 75 mm - - 1.2 2
Guard House Floor finish (screed) 75 mm - - 1.2 2.5
Room Floor finish (screed) 75 mm - - 1.2 1.5
Bathroom Floor finish (screed) 75 mm - - 1.2 2
Table 1: Initial SDL and LL

There are few assumptions that I have made.

1. All the loads from brick wall are transferred to guard house slab, instead of waiting area slab.
This is because the waiting area and guard house does not share the same slab. Furthermore,
only the guard house slab has pad footing.
2. The door and window within the brick wall are ignored.
3. The load of the brick wall is acting as an area distributed load to the slab, instead of point load
or line load.

Table 2: Brick wall load calculation

The computed SDL of the brick wall is then added into the initial SDL. Hence, the final SDL value is shown
as below. The load combination (Eurocode 2) will be applied on the SDL and LL (e.g. 1.35 SDL & 1.5 LL).

Roofing load

There are two roofs in the drawing, guard house roof and highest roof. Both guard house roof and
highest are made from same material. Due to insufficient information of roof detail, both zinc sheet and
steel framing’s SDL values are obtained online. The live load of the roof is extracted from Tables NA.7 of
the UK National Annex.
