Definition of ‘Geomatics’
• Geomatics is the discipline of gathering, storing, processing,
and delivering geographic information, or spatially referenced
information.
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

• Geomatics is concerned with the measurement,

representation, analysis, management, retrieval and display of
spatial data concerning both the Earths physical features and
the built environment. The principal disciplines embraced by
Geomatics include the mapping sciences, land management,
geographic information systems, environmental visualisation,
geodesy, photogrammetry, remote sensing and surveying.

Branches of Surveying
• Cadastral Survey
• Engineering Survey
• Hydrographic Survey
• Photogrammetry
• Topographic Survey
• Remote Sensing
• Geographical Information System
• Global Positioning System
Cadastral Survey
• Cadastral surveying is that branch of surveying
which is concerned with the survey and
demarcation of land for the purpose of defining
parcels of land for registration in a land registry.
• Locating property lines
• Subdividing land into smaller parts
• Determining land area
• Providing any other information involving the
transfer of land from one owner to another.
Cadastral Survey
Engineering Survey
• Engineering Surveying is an important
disciplinary field that serves construction
projects.
• Examples of construction projects that require
professional services of engineering surveyors
include projects in which buildings, highways,
railways, tunnels for transport systems and
utility systems, bridges and harbours are
constructed.
Engineering Survey
Hydrographic Survey
• Hydrographic Survey is an instrumental survey to
measure and determine characteristics of streams
and other bodies of water extent, and depth of
water in lakes or the ocean; the width, depth, and
course of streams; position and elevation of high
water marks; location and depth of wells, etc.
Hydrographic Survey
Photogrammetry
• Cameras are usually carried in airplanes to
obtain images
• Making measurements from photographs.
• Determine the positions on photographed
objects.
Photogrammetry
Topographic Survey
• Determining the relative locations of points
(places) on the earth's surface by measuring
horizontal distances, differences in elevation
and directions
• Producing topographic maps
• Topographic maps give the locations of places
(observable features); they serve as base
maps
Topographic Survey
Remote Sensing
• Remote sensors collect data by detecting the
energy that is reflected from Earth. These
sensors can be on satellites or mounted on
aircraft.
Remote Sensing
Geographical Information System
• A geographic information system (GIS)
integrates hardware, software, and data for
capturing, managing, analyzing, and displaying
all forms of geographically referenced
information.
• GIS allows us to view, understand, question,
interpret, and visualize data in many ways that
reveal relationships, patterns, and trends in
the form of maps, globes, reports, and charts.
Geographical Information System
Global Positioning System
• The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a space-
based satellite navigation system that provides location
and time information in all weather conditions, anywhere
on or near the Earth where there is an unobstructed line
of sight to four or more GPS satellites.
