The two ted talks we selected to compare are “Is Social Media Hurting Your Mental
Health” by Bailey Parnell and “Why I Don’t Use A Smart Phone” by Ann Makosinski. The
reason why we chose these pair of ted talks are because nowadays we live in a time and age
where information is just a button press away and social media are all around us. Bailey
Parnell in her ted talk said that a person can be too obsessed with social media including the
use of smart phone. She also reminds us that social media can bring harm to our mental
health including anxiety, depression and stress which may increase our mental illnesses.
Highlight reel, social currency, fear of missing out (F.O.M.O) and online harassments are
four stressors on social media. Highlight reel is the collection of the best and brightest
moments of a person on social media. They wanted to look great and these things make them
struggle with their own insecurity when they started to compare themselves with others.
“Economy of Attention” is what social currency is having right now. The change of sense of
identity to attract people’s attention towards them is getting worse as they are obsessed with
all responses on social media to them. Fear of missing out or F.O.M.O is an actual social
anxiety where you are missing a social potential connection and this kind of person would
feels something is missing when no smartphone with them. The second video, “Why I Don’t
Use A Smart Phone” tell us that you don’t even need a phone to enjoy your life and
smartphone is not everything in your life. The speaker, Ann Makosinski shared that without a
smart phone, you can explore many new things that beneficial to you. You can create new
things and do some innovations that eventually will make you a creative person.

The first comparison that we can conclude from this two ted talks is people’s
judgemental. As we know, people loves to judge either in front of us or behind us because we
always making our own assumptions without knowing the truth. The first ted talk by Bailey
Parnell talks about how people used to judge others on social media without thinking the
consequences. We will never know whether what we said may hurt others or not, that is why
we need to be caution of what we are saying. As people likes to judge others, some of us
might change ourselves just to ensure that no one will ever talk about them. The speaker also
tell that people are obsessed with others responses towards them as they think the responses
that they get will make them even better beyond their expectations on social media and that is
what people wanted when they are posting something on social media. Besides, they will try
their best to look great and change their sense of identity to stop people’s judgements towards
them. In real life or on social media, we cannot stop people to talk about us because no matter
how we cannot satisfies each people around us. In order to have better life, we just need to be
ourselves and follow the flow of our life. The second ted talks by Ann Makosinski shared
about how people judge the speaker when she wore attire like a boy at her young age. It
shows that no matter how we are, whether on social media or without social media, people
will keep judging us. The way we dressed up or the way we talk will bring others judgements
towards us even we are not doing anything bad to them. The only way to stop ourselves from
judging other people is to see the best in ourselves and stop comparing ourselves with others.
We need to control our heart and mind from seeing the bad in others but try to be the best of
the very best of us.
