Non-Verbal
Communication
Communication:
Communication (a Latin word, meaning "to share") is
the purposeful activity of information exchange between two or
more participants. There are many types of communication but only two different
types of communication we’re going to describe you.
►Verbal Communication
►Non-verbal Communication
Before going to read the relationship between verbal and non-
verbal communication, we must have to know about verbal communication and
non-verbal communication.

Verbal Communication:
Verbal or spoken communication is the communication of
saying words, basically this communication is consisting of talks, conversations,
phone calls, radio stations etc. in verbal communication we use our lingual skills,
lingual means speaking, and
speaking skills are directly
related to language and
grammar. So, we can’t
communicate verbally
without getting knowledge
about language and
grammar. Examples of verbal
communications are
meetings, Voice messages, call centers, conversations, etc.

Non-Verbal Communication:
Non-verbal communication is the communication without
saying any words. Basically, it refers to that communication in which we don’t say
anything in front of any person but express/gesture some feeling like Smiling ,
Frowning , widen eyes, touch someone and even if vocal volume is being raised.
These non-verbal communications help us to gain interest from listeners and we
can also use these to convey a non-verbal message to speaking person so that
he/she may continue talking.
Non-verbal messages may communicate specific meanings,
just as verbal messages do; let’s have a look at some of the channels of non-
verbal communication.
o The Body
o Facial Communication
o Eye Communication
o Space Communication
o Territoriality
o Artefactual Communication
o Touch Communication
o Time Communication
o Paralanguage
o Silence
o Smell Communication

Relationship between Verbal & Non-verbal

Communication:
Verbal and nonverbal communication techniques are used in many of
the same ways to send and receive messages during a conversation. Together
they emphasize emotions and draw attention to your point of view. While these
techniques are different in their delivery, they share certain unique similarities
and there is good relationship between Verbal and Non-Verbal Communication,
Let’s Have a look.

MANIPULATIVE: Verbal communi-

cation is manipulated through the use of lies.
Nonverbal communication allows for the same sort of
manipulation by using specific gestures that convey an
inaccurate emotion, for example, reassuring gestures or
fake smiles meant to relax those around you.
For example: You are failed in exam and
now you have to write a letter to your friend, in actual,
you’re really sad about your result but you don’t want
to noticed by your friend, so you will use good and pleasant words in letter and
try to pretend that you’re feeling great. This is for verbal communication.
On the other hand, you are failed in exams again, but this time, your
friend came to your home and have a meeting with you, in this situation, you will
pretend facially that you’re ok, fake smiles and fake excitement from your face
and body language are symbolically represent non-verbal communication.

EMOTION: People use both verbal and

nonverbal communication to express an emotional
state, and these are often used together for this
purpose. Simple emotions such as happiness and
sadness are simple to convey using either medium,
but more complex emotions such as confusion,
nervousness and self-doubt are also possible. You
can also unintentionally convey emotions using either medium. Nervousness, for
instance, shows both through broken speech patterns and stuttering, but also
through gestures like wringing your hands or popping your knuckles.
For example, you did very well in exams and you’re passed
with good grades. In this situation, you’re going to call you mother and tell her
about this good news. Using telephone, you’re actually using verbal
communication device. You’re not communicating your emotions through facial
or body or any channel but your selection of good and pleasant word will make it
sure to your mother that you’re feeling great.
On the other hand, for the justification of non-verbal
communication, you’re going to meet your mother physically and just because of
your good looks, happiness and joyful emotion including your body language,
your mother’s going to know that you’re very happy but not the actual reason
that is you have passed with good grades.

IDENTITY: Verbal speech

patterns identify specifics about your life, such
as where you grew up and your level of
education. Nonverbal communication is more
subtle but does the same thing. If you grew up
in a specific region or country, you will use
certain words that are indicative of that area
and use specific gestures that are not widely
utilized elsewhere. Your level of education is
evident in the sophistication of your word
choice but also in the utilization of professional
speech gestures that are gained though
training
Let’s just say, that a man wearing shalwar kameez, jinnah cap and
khuusa in his feet, is passing in front of you. Just because of his wearing sense,
body language facial expressions, somehow you’ll able you describe that where
that man came from. Note it down that you didn’t ask him verbally but you judge
him by his wearing sense and body language by using channels of non-verbal
communication.
RELATIONSHIP: Both forms of
communication are important for maintaining
healthy relationships. You inspire open
communication and inform your partner of your
current emotional state. You also use both to
encourage and create intimacy between partners.
For example, your younger sister breaks the glass and then she tells
you about this accident. In non-verbal communication, you’ll just express your
anger and then smile. On the other hand, in verbal communication, you’ll use
harsh or insulting words (depending upon your character) and then try to warn
her verbally with polite and decent words.
