SPECIMEN CALCULATION
Consider the 5th reading from Table 1 of soaked sample,
Penetration of plunger = 1.00 mm
Force gauge reading on top of the sample = 17 div
Force gauge reading on bottom of the sample = 16 div
Mean calibration of measuring gauge = (5.692X +4.32) 0.454 x 9.81 x 10-3

Force on plunger at the top = (5.692x17 +4.32) 0.454 x 9.81 x 10-3

= 0.45 kN

Force on plunger at the bottom = (5.692x16 +4.32) 0.454 x 9.81 x 10-3

= 0.42 kN

Moisture content calculations,

Considering Middle sample from Moisture Test of a Sample table,
Container no =I
Wt. of wet soil+container = 300.58 g
Wt. of dry soil+container = 270.10 g
Wt. of container = 154.76 g
Wt. of moisture = 300.58 – 270.10 g
= 30.48 g

Wt. of dry soil = 270.10 – 154.76 g

= 115.34 g

Moisture content = (Wm/Wd) x 100%

= 30.48 / 115.34 x 100%
= 26.43 %

CALCULATION
1.a) C.B.R. Value at 2.5 mm for 4day soaked sample
Standard force from Graph 01, = 13.2 kN

From Graph 03,

Force on plunger at top = 0.78 kN
Force on plunger at bottom = 0.91 kN

C.B.R. value = Average test force x 100%

Standard force
C.B.R. value at 2.5 mm for Top = (0.78/ 13.2) x 100%
= 6.00 %

C.B.R. value at 2.5 mm for Bottom = (0.91/ 13.2) x 100%

= 6.89 %

b) C.B.R. Value at 5.0 mm for 4day soaked sample

Standard force from Graph 01, = 20.0 kN

From Graph 02,

Force on plunger at top = 1.29 kN
Force on plunger at bottom = 1.46 kN

C.B.R. value at 5.0 mm = Average test force x 100%

Standard force

C.B.R. value at 5.0 mm for Top = (1.29/ 20.0) x 100%

= 6.45 %

C.B.R. value at 5.0 mm for Bottom = (1.46/ 20.0) x 100%

= 7.30 %

2.Moisture Content of 4day soaked sample

Moisture content after testing at top = 30.61 %
Moisture content after testing at middle = 26.43 %
Moisture content after testing at bottom = 29.06 %
Average moisture content, w = (30.61+26.43+29.06) / 3
= 28.70 %

3.Dry Density of 4day soaked sample

Dimensions of the mould,
Height = 175.5 mm
Diameter = 150.0 mm
Mass of the mould = 4515.0 g
Mass of the mould + soil = 8671.0 g
Thickness of spacer disk = 50.0 mm
Height of soil sample = 175.5 -50.0
= 125.5 mm

Volume of soil = πD2h/4

= π x 0.152 x (0.1255)/4
= 2.218 x 10-3m3

Mass of soil sample = 8645.0 – 4515.0

= 4130.0 g
= 4.130 kg

From theory,
Bulk density of the soil sample, ρb = (Ws+Ww)/ V
= 4.130/ 2.218 x 10-3
= 1862.04 kg/m3

Dry density, ρd = ρb / (1+w)

= 1862.04/ (1+0.287)
= 1446.81 kg/m3
