ACTIVITY DESIGN
I. GENERAL DESCRIPTION
A. Title SEMINAR-WORKSHOP ON THE MANIPULATION OF SCIENCE &
MATH EQUIPMENT & UNPACKING OF LEARNING COMPETENCIES
B. Description This seminar-workshop will explore and manipulate the role that
a wide range of equipment could play in effective science & mathematics
teaching and learning in the elementary level. Current research will be
reviewed to support, and challenge, the contention and manipulation of
practical aids is helpful and often necessary to the development of
learners’ mental images of science and mathematical concepts.
Unpacking on the other hand, provides an opportunity to
determine the proper road map of progression within a subject and how
it relates with prior and future learning opportunities.
C. Date September 14-15, 2018 (Friday - Saturday)
D. Management Level Division Level
E. Resource Speaker: Mrs. Salvacion A. Adana
Mr. Oliver C. Catacutan
F. Delivery Mode Face-to-face with Job-Embedded Learning
G. Venue To be arranged
H. Target Participants Science & Mathematics Elementary Teachers – 82

II. Rationale It has been a common practice for many years for elementary
teachers the use of resources as an essential part of teaching and
learning science and mathematics.

Specific science and math equipment, or manipulatives, are

objects designed to represent explicitly and concretely science and
mathematical ideas. They can be used as models by both teachers and
learners, hold a visual and tactile appeal, and, as such, are designed
primarily for hands – on manipulation.

For many students think that science and math are intimidating
subjects. Low achieving and average students tend to shy away from
such subjects as they represent unfamiliar and difficult concepts.

Unwrapping or unpacking learning standard results in a form,

more easily translated into unit and daily lesson plans. This process
helps educators what is essential to instruction. The unpacked standard
alone should be enough for planning. Take into consideration that if a
standard is already small enough, unpacking might not be necessary.
The teacher’s first task is to always identify the standard. Unpacking also
provides an opportunity to determine the proper road map of progression
within a subject and how it relates with prior and future learning
opportunities.

Helping students learn more about science and math and

become more skilled at problem solving and analysis through the use of
different equipment and explore the learning competencies has been
the goal of the division in conducting this 2-Day Seminar – Workshop
on the Manipulation of Science and Math Equipment and Unpacking
of Learning Competencies wherein the teacher- participants, as
designer and implementer of instruction, will be making lesson plan on
the manipulation of science and math equipment.

III. Objectives In this seminar-workshop, participants are able to:

1. value resources to the teaching and learning of science and
mathematics;
2. manipulate different science and mathematics equipment;
3. write /develop well-prepared daily lesson plan on the use of
science and math equipment;
4. analyze the learning progression in the Science and Mathematics
curriculum standards;
5. articulate the framework of the Science and Mathematics
curriculum and its various domains in relation to the different skills
develop;
6. analyze the salient features of the DepEd Science and
Mathematics curriculum.
