(The teacher will write two sentences on the
board.)
1. Namongan thought Lam-ang was up
to challenge. She was sad to let him
go.
2. Namongan thought Lam-ang was up
to challenge but she was sad to let
him go.

“What can you say about those sentences?” (Students will give their opinion)
Ma’am, those sentences are from the story
we discussed last meeting.

Very Good! What else?

Ma’am both number have two sentences but
number one only used period, while number
two, used the word “but”.

Good Answer! Is there anything else you

observed?

In number two Ma’am, there is a word “but”

while in number one, there is no word “but”.

Very good observation!

“So, as you see that number one has no word
“but” and the number two has,
Now, who can tell me, what is the function of
the word “but” ?
Ma’am it connects the two sentences.

Very good!

D. PRESENTING EXAMPLES/ INSTANCES FOR

THE NEW LESSON
“Do you think this line: “Namongan thought
Lam-ang was up to challenge ”is an
independent clause?”
Yes Ma’am!

“Are you sure?”

Yes Ma’am!

“How do you say so?”

“Do you know what is an independent
clause?
Ma’am, sentence can be called independent
clause when it has a subject, a verb or an
action word and it has a complete thought
and it can stand by its own.
Very nice answer! But, how can we say that
a sentence has a complete thought?

Ma’am when it has enough details to be

understood by the readers.

“That’s right! And what is the other term or

the correct term we can use in a sentence
that has an independent clause or in the
sentence that has a complete thought?”
“Ma’am, that is a simple sentence”

Excellent!
“So, the term used when the sentence is an
independent clause, or has a complete
thought is a simple sentence” understand?
Yes Ma’am.

Very Good! Again, what is a simple sentence?

Ma’am, a simple sentence is an independent

clause and has a complete thought.

Very Good! Therefore, who can identify

which is the subject in the first sentence in
number one? “Namongan”

Good! “How about the verb or the action

word?” “thought”

“How can you say that it is an independent

clause or a simple sentence? Ma’am, because we can understand the
whole idea of the sentence.

Very Good! If the sentence “ Namongan

thought Lam-ang was up to challenge.”is an
independent clause, how about “She was sad
to let him go.”Is that also an independent
clause? Yes Ma’am

“How do you say so ?”

Ma’am, because it also has a subject which is
She, and a verb was, and it has a complete
thought.

Exactly!
E. Discussing new concepts and practicing
new skills #1
Now, in number 2, (“Namongan thought
Lam-ang was up to challenge but she was sad
to let him go.”) how many independent
clause do we have? Ma’am, we have two independent clauses.

Good! So what again connects our two

independent clause? Ma’am, the word “but”
QUEZONIAN EDUCATIONAL COLLEGE INC.
ATIMONAN, QUEZON
__________________________________________________________________

The word but! Very good! And that word is

what we called coordinator.

“Anyone? Who can tell, what is the function

Ma’am, Coordinators are used to connect,
of coordinator/s?”
coordinate or combine words, phrases and
clauses.

Very Good Answer!

“Now class, aside from but we still have
another coordinators, and for us to
remember it better, just think of FANBOYS,
because our coordinators are:
For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet and So. And of
that , class, if you see two sentences or two
independent clauses joined together with
those coordinators, that sentences is what
we called the compound sentence.”

Is that clear? Yes Ma’am!

“Again, who can repeat? what is a compound

sentence? Ma’am, Compound Sentence contains two or
more independent clause and joined
together with a coordinator.

Very Good!
Now, look at this sentence:

“Me and my mom are going to town.”

Is this a simple sentence?

Yes ma’am!
Or a compound sentence?

Ma’am, because it’s only used two subject

How do you say so?
but has only one thought that’s why it is said
to be a simple sentence.

sentence are?

Ma’am, are going to town.

How about the verb or the action word?

Yes ma’am!
Nice! But, is that sentence shows complete
thought?

Very Good!
“So it only means that even if the sentence
uses two subjects and used the coordinator
“and” but has only one a complete thought it
is also included as a simple sentence.
Yes ma’am!
Is that clear?

That’s Very Good!

F. Discussing new concepts and practicing
