Lesson Title
Selective Breeding/Artificial Selection
Lesson Duration
120 minutes (Two Class periods)
Standard(s)
AKS 3d (GSE S7L3c)
Ask questions and define the problems with the ways humans influence the inheritance of desired
traits in organisms through selective breeding, specifically, how artificial selection is fundamentally
different from natural selection.
Lesson Objective(s)
Students will be able to:
develop questions and explain how human interference can cause problems for organisms
which are selectively bred.
Materials Needed
Laptops or Chromebooks with webcam/microphone functions (or smartphone)
Headsets/earbuds if done in classroom.
Lesson Description
Lesson
1. Students will view the two presentations (Screencast-o-matic and Prezi) and gain
understanding of selective breeding/artificial selection and compare/contrast that to natural
selection.
2. Students will complete Interactive Resource #1, Flipgrid, and post a verbal explanation
(definition) of selective breeding and compare it to natural selection. They will also respond
to two other students’ Flipgrid videos and explain what they agree with or pose questions to
their peers.
3. Students then complete Interactive Resource #2, Nearpod/Google slides, where they work
through the activity, learning about examples of selective breeding, advantages and
disadvantages of selective breeding, and begin to develop questions that help determine
whether a scenario is an example of selective breeding or natural selection.
4. Students proceed to Interactive Resource #3, a Quizizz game, where they test their
knowledge of the topic and determine whether they need more review on the material or
they are ready to take the graded END OF MODULE assessment. They will be given three tries
on the Quizizz to achieve a minimum score of 85%. If they have exhausted these attempts
and their maximum score is still not an 85%, they will be directed to review the material in
the Wakelet/Resources tab, viewing/reading all materials as a remediation step.
5. Students proceed to the interactive resource #4, a Lino activity, where they will write about
their understanding of the topic. Students will communicate what parts of the topic they
struggled with the most. This is also where they will let me know what questions they still
have about artificial selection and what they want to learn more about. This information can
give me insight as to what direction(s) we can go for extension material.
6. For this last step in the module, students will take Google Quiz. This quiz will contain some
multiple choice questions, check-boxes, and a writing piece. If students score below an 80%,
they will be directed to review the instructional and review materials (found in the Wakelet).
Assessment Plan
Self-checking formatives are embedded within the module, in both the Nearpod and Quizizz,
and via peer feedback in Flipgrid.
At the conconclusion of the lesson, students will then take the attached Google Quiz:

Remediation Plan
Students who do not score an 80% or higher on the End of Module Assessment will be
identified by the instructor and directed to review the Google Presentation and the Prezi at
the start of the module, then view the materials included on the last page of the website,
called Wakelet/Resources. When they have completed the review, these students may
attempt the Google Quiz again.
Additional Information
This assignment is planned for a two class periods; however, it’s possible that more time will be
required. It is also likely that the lesson will be more successful if the students have used most of the
resources in the past.
