Exercise 8.

Question 1

A current of 2.00 A is passed through a potassium sulphate solution for 30.0 minutes
at 25.00C using graphite electrodes. Calculate the volume, in cm3, of the gas evolved
at the anode at 100.0 kPa. [STPM, 6 marks]

Question 2

A student carried out an experiment to study the electrolysis of molten lead(II)

bromide using graphite electrodes.
(a) When a current of 3.0 A was passed for 30 minutes a bead of lead of mass
5.60 g was obtained.
(i) How many coulombs were passed?
(ii) In this experiment how many coulombs would be required to deposits
one mole of lead?

(b) One mole of lead contains L atoms; the charge on one electron is e coulombs.
(i) Deduce the equation which links L, e and the result obtained in (a)(ii).
(ii) If the value of e,1.6 x 10-19 C is used, what value does this experiment
give for L?
(iii) Suggest a reason why the value obtained in (d)(ii) is not exactly the
theoretical value?

Question 2

A student carried out an experiment to study the electrolysis of molten lead(II)

bromide using graphite electrodes.
(a) When a current of 3.0 A was passed for 30 minutes a bead of lead of mass
5.60 g was obtained.
(i) How many coulombs were passed?
Q = It
= 5.4 X 103 C

(ii) In this experiment how many coulombs would be required to deposits

one mole of lead?
1 mole Pb  207 g
5.4 X 103 C  5.60 g
Q required to deposit 1 mole Pb  5.4 X 103(207/5.60)
Q = 199600 C

(b) One mole of lead contains L atoms; the charge on one electron is e coulombs.
(i) Deduce the equation which links L, e and the result obtained in (a)(ii).

Pb2+ + 2e  Pb
2 X L X e = 199600 C

(ii) If the value of e,1.6 x 10-19 C is used, what value does this experiment
give for L?

L = 199600/2e
L = 199600/(2 X 1.6 X 10-19)
L = 6.24 X 1023

(iii) Suggest a reason why the value obtained in (d)(ii) is not exactly the
theoretical value?

Impurities present in the sample

Or not 100% current passed through are use in the depositing Pb
Or it is difficult to maintain constant current flow.
