Procedure of design a cross and head regulator

1- Crest level and length
Cross regulator = U/S bed level
Head regulator = 0.3 m to 1m
higher than the U/S bed level

Slope of glacis
Cross reg. = D/S slope 2:1 and U/S no slope
Head reg. = D/S slop 2:1 and U/S slope 1:1

Crest length = 2/3 H

2- Water way

Where :- Q= full discharge in the canal
L= length of clear water way
h= (U/S WL – D/S WL) of the crest = F.S.L at river - F.S.L at canal
v2
hv= Velocity head = , neglecting velocity head because small
2g

velocity in the canal .

d= the depth of D/S water over the crest
Cd1= coefficient of discharge for free discharge = 0.577
Cd2= coefficient of discharge for submerged partition discharge = 0.8
So that the equation can be written :

𝑸𝑸 = 𝟏𝟏. 𝟕𝟕 ∗ 𝑳𝑳 ∗ 𝒉𝒉𝟑𝟑⁄𝟐𝟐 + 𝟑𝟑. 𝟓𝟓𝟓𝟓 ∗ 𝑳𝑳 ∗ 𝒅𝒅 ∗ √𝒉𝒉
